Democracy promotion has been historically an integral part of U. S. foreign policy since at least the early twentieth century. Evaluate US democracy promotion from the perspective of each of the three main theoretical approaches to the studying of international relations we discussed in the class. Does democracy promotion matter at all according to individual theoretical approaches? What effects it has on international relations? While many in the U.S. perceive democracy promotion as a projection of the VALUE dear to the freedom-loving world, in much of the rest of the world Washington’s policy of democracy promotion is seen rather as a projection of American POWER. Explain the difference between the projection of value and the projection of power as you see it. Discuss the consequences (e.g., for great power rivalry, for international terrorism, and for the future of international organizations) of the perceptions of publics abroad of U.S. democracy promotion as an example of the projection of American power. Given these consequences what advice would you give to President Obama with respect to democracy promotion? Should he continue with this component of U.S. foreign policy? Should he authorize the use of force in the name of democracy promotion overseas or should he stick to non-violent means? (Please do not provide simple “yes” or “no” questions only without elaborating on the position you take.
