Chapter 7: The Renaissance – Discussion #1

Thinking in terms of a good billboard or advertisement (image, title, tagline, etc.), create an ad featuring one of Leonardos inventions from the classroom list (below)

You will need to decide the most important feature or function of the invention and then figure out how to show it in the advertisement.

Discuss why you selected the invention and the process you went through to develop the ad. Please write at least one paragraph. Basically, think about a really good sales pitch. I am interested to see what you come up with. The list is below.

Leonardos inventions:
Flying Machine
Aerial Screw (Helicopter)
Parachute
33-Barreled Organ
Armored Car
Giant Crossbow
Triple Barrel Cannon Clock (a more accurate clock)
Colossus (Mold-Making Technique)
Ideal city
Robotic Knight Self-Propelled Car
Scuba Gear
Revolving Bridge
Anemometer (measures wind speed)

Discussion #2

"Leonardos restless imagination, in fact, led him to the study of almost everything: natural phenomena like wind, storms and the movement of water; anatomy and physiology; physics and mechanic; music; mathematics; plants and animals; geology; and astronomy, to say nothing of painting and drawing" (Sayre, 220).

Thinking in terms of today, who else would you consider to be a Renaissance man or woman?

Please explain your pick in at least one paragraph and cite your sources.

Chapter 8: Renaissance and Reformation in the North – Discussion #1

Chapter 8 briefly mentions one of the greatest writers of all time, William Shakespeare. In one of his works entitled As You Like It, there is this quote:

"All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players"

What is your interpretation of this phrase? Please write at least one paragraph and cite your sources.

Discussion #2

Check out the Closer Look section for Chapter 8 on Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. Sayre poses an interesting question, "Bosch’s closed triptych differs from its interior most especially in its lack of color. How do you account for this difference?" (Sayre, 254).

Please respond in at least one paragraph and cite your sources.

Below is a link to the Pearson tour of the triptych. (You may have to copy the link and open it in a new window).

Chapter 9 Discussion #1

Chapter 9 covered encounters of one civilization to another and the dramatic impacts they had on those cultures including war, famine, disease, and slavery. However, benefits from such encounters impacted the arts, religion and even food!

Now, think of an object that is common to our everyday culture; a watch, a chair, Coca-cola, etc. How would you describe this object to a civilization that has never seen this object before?

Keep in mind, this is a culture which has remained unknown about and undiscovered in our modern time.

Please write at least one paragraph.

Chapter 10: The Counter-Reformation and the Baroque – Discussion #1

Chapter 10 introduced to us Artemisia Gentileschi and the expression of her personal tragedy in her works. Thinking about our modern time, given an example of someone who has used an artistic medium (literature, art, music, etc) to overcome a personal tragedy.

Be sure to write at least one paragraph and cite your sources.

Discussion #2

Take a look at the Closer Look section on pages 330-31 in your text. This Closer Look focuses on Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp. After reading the section, answer Sayre’s question in at least one paragraph and cite your sources:

"While it is the hand that distinguishes man from beast, why would an artist like Rembrandt be especially drawn to representing its dissection?" (Sayre, 330).
