The terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11, 2001 where both sobering and tragic. As with other sensless acts of violence, it is important to periodically reflect on such events, mourn the deaths of those victimized through them, support the families of those who have lost loved ones, and dialogue with others to find ways to move forward and do everything possible to stop such tragedies from occuring again. Certaininly 9/11 had many consequences, many of which remain unresolved. One example is the controversy surrounding the planned Islamic community center and prayer space near Ground Zero in NYC. Though this story has been all over the media and has in some ways obscured the rememberance this year of those killed in the 9/11 tragedy (who, let us not forget, included a number of Muslims), there has been little coverage on the long-term consequences of 9/11 on Muslim families across the nation.
