You will write a term or research paper (8 15 pages) on a topic of your choice, which has been approved by the professor.
Be sure to provide a broad conclusion and then support it with specific examples. You are welcome to use material from Chasteen, Blood and Fire, and Wood and Chasteen. Major Problems. The essay can focus on anything from the course and when appropriate, address both rhetoric and reality, or words/ ideas and actions/events.
Your thesis should be clear and explicit and can be simple and elegant, but should not be simplistic. The devil is in the details, as the saying goes, or as architect Mies van der Rohe liked to say “God is in the details.” Choose your terms carefully and explain them whenever necessary, and to again quote Mies “less is more.” Choose a few things to say and explain well. DO NOT JUST TELL A STORY. MAKE AN ARGUMENT.
You are expected to use numerous sources, but this will vary depending on the question and topic.
You will be evaluated on clarity of argument and use and choice of evidence. This is a relatively substantial paper, so the use of sources will be very important. Be sure that the arguments and evidence support one another. Arguments require that all ideas are logically coherent and are supported with evidence. Without evidence you are only expressing opinions, which cannot be properly evaluated. Without logic and coherence, you are simply rambling. Any argument will be considered, as long it is coherent and supported by specific historical evidence.
Deal with one topic per paragraph, use topic sentences and the active voice. See below for guidance:
