After reading the document entitled “Leadership” within the Mod 6 folder on the ANGEL course web site, read 2 of the web articles listed at the bottom of that page. If you choose “Leaders and Revolutionaries,” read about one of the people listed on that page; you don’t have to read them all, but you may. Review Thinkwell material. Look over the assignments you have completed. Post a new message in this topic area. Type your name as the subject. Read all the instructions before you begin. If other students have already posted messages, read theirs before you post yours. Respond to other posts as well.
Here is the message content for your two paragraphs:
1. After thinking about all of the above, write one paragraph explaining at least two ideas you’ve learned that contribute to successful leadership. I suggest you begin with a topic sentence that names the two ideas. Then clearly define and explain the first idea with concrete supporting details about how leaders use the idea. Then do the same for the second idea. Use terminology from the articles you read, Module 6 information from the ANGEL course web site, and Thinkwell. Use quotations or paraphrase and give credit to your information appropriately. You may also agree or disagree with what you have read or heard, etc. There is room for creativity here. Provide thoughtful, fully developed answers.
2. In a second paragraph, write how you will apply these ideas in your own life to be a successful leader. Be concrete. Don’t just say, I’ll apply the two things I mentioned above. Tell me when and where you will use these skills and ideas as well as explain how you will measure them. For example, if one idea you’ll apply is more effective listening, then explain how you will apply it to a work project or a community organization; explain what that means and how you will evaluate your success. Your post should be at least 300 original words (not including copying the questions into your answers).
Leadership
What is leadership?
As you read these quotes about leadership, think about your own definition:
The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. It’s got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion.” – Theodore Hesburgh, President of the University of Notre Dame [from Donald Clark’s online book introduction to The Leadership Page at http://www.nwlink.com/%7Edonclark/leader/leader.html on 11 Apr. 2004]
Good leaders make people feel that they’re at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning.” -Warren Bennis
“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.” -Max De Pree, “Leadership Is an Art”
“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” -Dwight D Eisenhower
“‘Be not afraid,’ was one of Pope John Paul II’s favorite sayings, words that should give more leaders the courage and backbone to carry out their mission.” – Laura Nash, senior lecturer at the Harvard Business School and co-author of Church on Sunday, Work on Monday.
“The difference between a boss and a leader: a boss says, ‘Go!’ – a leader says, ‘Let’s go!'” -E. M. Kelly, Growing Disciples, 1995
“Leadership is a combination of strategy and character. If you must be without one, be without the strategy.” -Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf
“Time is neutral and does not change things. With courage and initiative, leaders change things.” -Jesse Jackson
“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go but ought to be.” – Rosalynn Carter
“The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes.” – Tony Blair
“Integrity may be the single most important characteristic of competent leadership; it’s the sine qua non of a trusted advisor and effective leader. People are willing to be led by someone who follows through – someone they trust. Do what you say you will do. Don’t promise to do what you can’t. People without integrity may gain power, but they don’t truly lead. ” Ellen Ostrow, Ph.D., “20 Ways to Become a Leader”
“A leader is someone who helps others do and become more than they ever thought possible. Leadership is about unlocking potential, whether individual potential or that of a group, company, or organization. It is not about telling people what to do, but inspiring them to see what they are capable of, then, helping them get there.” – Lisa Dewey, “Five Qualities Good Leaders Possess.” Girl Scouts of the USA website
