Each essay question asks for two examples.
Your essay must include at least a paragraph (not a sentence or two — a paragraph) for each example and a third paragraph that usefully compares or contrasts the two examples.
________________________________
The third paragraph is important: You are not done when you have just given two examples even if they are well chosen and well discussed. You need to bounce them off each other, comparing or, preferably, contrasting them on some basis that is related to the question. Contrasting the two leaders is usually much more interesting and insightful than comparing them. ?Both of these leaders were tall and strong? doesn?t show you thought much about them. Was one example smarter, hastier, more farsighted, better prepared, luckier, more experienced, more logical, more emotional, than the other? What in the movies told you so? Was each leader?s success proportional to his or her leadership skills? Why not?

Using leadership examples from any of the following movies, answer the following three questions.
Movies
The Hunt for Red October and 12 Angry Men.
Twelve O?Clock High and Hoosiers.
The Devil Wears Prada and Norma Rae.
Dead Poets Society and Citizen Kane.
Wall Street and The Godfather.
The Bridge on the River Kwai and Apollo 13.
Your examples should be chosen to illustrate your opinion about each question, but your examples need not be the main character in each movie, if you think some other leader in the movie is a better example.
Question 2
Part of leadership is the assessment of risk. Some risks are unavoidable, like the risk of meeting a stronger team in sports, or superior firepower in battle. Other risks are avoidable, but are taken by leaders as acceptable risks as part of the mission. Identify two scenes of risk-taking behavior in the assigned movies, where leaders willingly and knowingly took avoidable risks. What was the alternative? (That is, what made the risk they took avoidable?) What evidence did they have that the potential reward was worth the risk, and what success did each leader have?
Question 3
Organizations have leaders at every level ? that means that some leaders are leaders of leaders. An important leadership challenge is to foster leadership among subordinates or team members without completely giving up control. Identify two cases of leaders in the assigned movies facing this challenge ? the balance of delegating authority but retaining authority — and in each case explain how the approach was successful or unsuccessful.
Question 4
Most movies have a “character arc” implying that one or more principal characters change during the span of the action. In some cases we might expect the leaders we have watched to change in some way. Among the leadership examples in the assigned movies, identify one case where a leader demonstrates leadership qualities or skills by changing, and another case where a leader demonstrates leadership qualities or skill by NOT changing.
