Guidelines to help with the Learner Diary:
3. Module Aims
This module aims to build by giving you the ability to analyse a range of texts from different professional contexts and identify the ways in which power relations between participants operate. In doing so, you will engage with theoretical ideas about language, gender, power and identity at work. Through the use of examples from different professional contexts (for example advertising, law and business) you will gain an extensive knowledge of the social and pragmatic details of professional genres and registers. Building on work carried out in the module it also aims to give you a greater awareness of and skill at participating within particular professional speech events through interactive role play exercises based on interviews and meetings.

• Describe and critically evaluate the linguistic and pragmatic features of distinctive texts from a range of professional fields (for example advertising, media, law, education, politics) and understand how professional speech situations (for example meetings and interviews) operate
• Construct and evaluate complex ideas about the relationship between language and power in professional contexts

You may critically analyze any 2 of the following readings. However, kindly check what was taught in each week (1-10) & select the readings accordingly.

The seminar schedule was thus:

Block One: Theories and Methods for Analysis (6 weeks). In this introductory block of the course we consider theoretical ideas about the relationships between language, power and authority of different kinds in the workplace. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Conversation Analysis (CA) are introduced as the main analytical and theoretical frameworks for the module and we consider some of the problems inherent in relating a micro-analysis of linguistic features to different ideological positions.

Week 1: 13th October: Introduction to the Course – Studying language and power

Week 2: 20th October: Introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)

Week 3: 27th October: Using Critical Discourse Analysis to analyse workplace interaction

Week 4: 3rd November: Introduction to Conversation Analysis (CA)

Week 5: 10th November: Using Conversation Analysis to analyse workplace interaction

Week 6: 17th November: Tutorial Week/Reading Week

Block Two: ‘Language and Gender at Work’ (6 weeks) In the second part of the course we focus on gender as a significant social category in relation to language and power in professional contexts. Using the Critical Discourse Analysis presented in block one, we examine a range of professional contexts and attempt to account for the role of language and gender within them. In doing so, we discuss different theoretical ideas about gender and identity, and relate these to the types of analysis that are carried out.

Week 7: 24th November: Introduction to Gender and Language in the Workplace

Week 8: 1st December: Women, men and institutional behaviour: What does the data show?

Week 9: 8th December: Gendered discourses and gender differentiation

Week 10: 15th December: Methods for analysing gender and language in workplace settings
