Scenario 1 Length 400-500 words
Apply the bioethical principle of beneficence to the dilemma below.
RN Kate is currently a post graduate Masters student who is required to design and undertake a research project as part of her studies. You are a new RN, recently employed at the same aged care facility, often working with Kate. Kate tells you she has an idea for her research project but is going to try it out before putting up a proposal. Her intention is to identify among residents two groups; the first will have a history of smoking and alcohol use, the second will have no reports of this in their medical history. Kate will design memory and physical stamina tests and compare the two groups.
Scenario 2 Length 400-500 words
Apply the bioethical principle of non maleficence to the scenario.
Kate has identified 10 residents who were or are, currently smokers or regular users of alcohol and a group of 10 who have no history of use. They are all between 80-84 years of age. Her tests will be 3 quizzes testing recall, arithmetic and language use plus a series of physical activities: walking 300 metres, muscle strength with lifting bar bells and flexibility tests with bending and stretching. Pre and post physical tests she will take BP and pulse. Kate will record and compare the capacity of each group.
Scenario 3 Length 400-500 words.
Apply the bioethical principle of autonomy to the scenario
You identify to Kate that there might be issues with her using client records and initiating studies without approval. You raise the question of client consent to participate in these activities. Kate replies “it is diversional activity, they don’t need to know I am keeping records and they will appreciate the extra attention and stimulation”.
Scenario 4 Length 400-500 words
Refer to the ANMC codes to discuss the ethical issues in relation to Kate’s plan.
For each of the scenarios you are required to demonstrate ethical reasoning; you are expected to show you understand the meaning of the principle/ethical value and its relevance to the scenario question. You need to give your rationale for its application to the identified dilemma.

The considered decision as a result of your problem solving is of less importance than your ability to demonstrate you understand the issues and your capacity to show your ethical reasoning.
