4. Major report (50%)
You are required to prepare a detailed report on an approved topic related to contemporary industry practice. Your report should be prepared and presented in a professional manner. It should be not less than 4500 words (excluding abstract, bibliography, appendices etc) and not more than 6,000 words. Your submission must include the following:
• Title page
• Table of contents
• Executive summary (no more than two pages)
• The main body of the report arranged into sections with sections and sub-sections named and numbered in a conventional manner
• A reference list/bibliography
Acknowledgements, appendices and any other sections you may find necessary are optional and are not included in the word count.
Each student will make a short presentation (approx. 8 minutes duration) to the group outlining the topic chosen and summarizing their research. This will occur in Week 7 – you should be well advanced with your research by the time you make your presentation. The presentations will not be marked directly, however, failure to make a reasonably detailed presentation (within the 8 minute time limit) and demonstrate substantial progress will result in a reduction in marks for the final report. Failure to present will mean your final report mark will have 10% deducted, making a presentation that lacks sufficient content will mean a 5% reduction in the final mark for this assessment task.
It is essential that your final report is properly and completely referenced. Use the Harvard/APA or “name/date” style of referencing for all references. No other system will be accepted. Footnotes must not be used for referencing but can be used to give extra information or explanation which would otherwise make the main text less readable. Web references will be treated like any other sort of reference.
Your report should be bound – plastic comb or spiral wire binding is fine but DO NOT use loose leaf slip-in plastic sleeves or ring binders. You are not required to have your report professionally bound like a thesis. You are also required to upload your assignment in Word format through iLearn – a Turnitin assignment has been created in iLearn.
Your report should contain some critical analysis or evaluation of the subject matter rather than being merely a collection of facts and opinions nicely presented in a structured format. You should have a topic chosen and approved by the Monday of Week 2. Your topic should be one that will give you the opportunity to make some observations about the good points and bad points and make some thoughtful recommendations about future developments in the area.
There is a list of potential topic areas below – it is not exhaustive and you are encouraged to put forward other topics for consideration.
While it is not essential you are also encouraged to seek input from people in industry – you might conduct some interviews to gather opinions on the topic that you are researching but how you research will depend largely on the topic you choose. For example, if you chose to pursue a topic in construction law you will probably rely mostly on published material: law reports, law journals and so on. If on the other hand you were researching something to do with online tendering and procurement you would be well advised to talk to a few people in industry who are working with these things on a daily basis.
