Not only do both of these statements assert a specific opinion, but they also establish an opinion that you must prove based on the evidence you find in the production.
2.) Evidence. In order to prove your thesis, you must provide specific evidence from the production. Evidence can be gleaned from directorial choices, acting choices, and design choices. While you may certainly find evidence to support your argument within the story itself, you must also support it with evidence that is unique to this production—this makes the difference between responding to live theatre and responding to a play text.
3.) Analysis. Once you assert an argument and provide evidence for it, you must
explain your logical connection between the two. In a critical essay, evidence never
“speaks for itself”. You must use your own reasoning to explain how your evidence proves your argument.
4.) And of course, effective critical essays incorporate proper grammar, use correct punctuation, and avoid slang.
Paper format:
A.) Your papers should be typed and double-spaced, using a 12-point font.
B.) Your papers should have 1-inch margins.
C.) All play titles should be italicized.
D.) The specific length of each critical response will be indicated to you on the individual assignment sheet for that response.
