Literary Essay: A literary essay is an essay that does not follow the formats of any particular genre. We have been practicing a particular genre, the academic analysis essay. There are many kinds of essays: reports, book reviews, reference articles, travel writing, lab reports, and so on. Before any of those forms were invented, there was a form called “the essay,” which is a non-fiction piece of writing where you say whatever you can about one topic.
Michel de Montaigne invented the essay in the 1500s, and he published his writing in a book called Essais in 1580. “Essais” in Renaissance French means “Attempts.” The idea of the essay is that you make your best attempt at a topic. You give it your best try. You take any particular topic, think of all the different angles from which you can look at it, and write down everything you can think of to say.
Literary essays are not usually written by experts on the topic — the essayist is usually a non-expert who wants to explain why the topic is fascinating or important or affecting. The pleasure of reading an essay is to see the writer’s mind at work.
Your guidelines are pretty much open:
Write about any topic. You have this chance to tell the world about any one thing, that will fit into a couple pages, that most people do not know about. What one thing will you tell us?
You can use any level of formality, organizational strategy (such as narrative, thesis-evidence-conclusion, stream-of-consciousness, or collage of bits of writing), tone (objective, neutral, enthusiastic, bitter, funny, bemused, etc.), or dialect that you please.
There are some requirements, however:
It must be an essay in the Montaignean sense, a writer’s best try at a topic
The rhetorical goal is to explore the topic, to pick it up and look at it from all sides
The pleasure the readers get from it is to watch your mind at work
