Cultures around the world seem of differ in the degree to which they socialize people to be more collective or more individualistic.
Collective cultures value obedience to the elders of a culture, but they also value harmonious relationships among the members of a culture. In some collective cultures we see men showing some behaviors such as compassion and submission, which we tend to stereotype as more feminine reactions, yet many such cultures relegate females to a less than dominant position in society.
More individualistic cultures, such as the United States, value individual power and influence. They are generally thought of as ?less traditional? and more modern, industrial and capitalistic. Theoretically, any sub-group in such a society need not feel captive or his or her ?place in society?, as it is always possible to advance.
The cultural bind, Kibria writes in Family Tightrope Levies certain requirements against the collective culture family member. One has to pay a certain amount of homage to the family and the collective to remain a part of the collective
For some of us that means women might face more of this collective bind, although Kibria does tell a number of stories about both men and women
