For this paper, you are to read various selections from Herodotus’ Histories, each passage dealing with one or more of the major themes that characterize that author’s work. There will be five selections, of which you must choose four. A secondary source must be consulted and evidence by including exact text from the source with page number and line number should be mentioned. Carefully analyze and please discuss how each of your passages corresponds to the following themes (NB, not every selection will correspond to more than one theme):
1. Retribution: One of the main causes of events in human history. Retribution involves the correction of an imbalance caused by excessive greed, ambition, power etc. It can be natural (inclement weather, natural disasters etc.), divine (wrath of the gods) or both.
2. Desire: Another cause of the events of human history. Desire can be sexual, but can also be motivated by lust for money, power etc. This cause generally precedes retribution, since it can cause an imbalance that will ultimately require correction through punishment.
3. Anthropology (culture, topography, religion etc.): [an important aspect] A more remote cause of events, but important nonetheless. The bad climate or topography of a nation may cause it to seek better territory and thus conquer its neighbor. Of course, this cause can be combined with desire. On the other hand, sometimes the cultural features of a nation contribute to its success or failure in war.
Structure of essay:
– Introduction: In a paragraph, introduce the passages you have chosen and how well they correspond to the themes mentioned above.
– Body: Choose four selections from the five offered below and consider how each corresponds to the themes (four paragraphs).
– Conclusion: A paragraph about what you have discovered about Herodotus’ style.
