Summing up the third unit of man-woman relationships:
In the op-ed column of the New York Times of November 16, the columnist David Brooks writes:
The number of Americans who are living alone has shot up from 9 percent in 1950 to 28 percent today. In 1990, 65 percent of Americans said that children are very important to a successful marriage. Now, only 41 percent of Americans say they believe that. There are now more American houses with dogs than with children.
“The Age of Possibilities”, (NYT, Nov 16, 2012, A35.)
The op-ed article is posted on Course Documents on BlackBoard.
In the past, most women were depended on their husbands economically and emotionally. We see it in three stories we have read: Hawthorne’s “The Birth Mark”, Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper , and Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour.” In all three stories this dependency causes the three wives great distress and unhappiness.
In what way has relationship between two people living together intimately in the 21st century changed from the way they lived in the first half of the 20th century? Are married people happier today than they were in the past? Are married women happier today than they used to be?
The paper should be based on first hand research: interviewing four to six people (or mote), people who experienced living together with a spouse, and some singles. You should try to interview a single mother or father, as well as more mature singles or couples, (better to interview each of the couple individually.)
How to do it:
Preparation:
1. Read David Brook’s op-ed article posted on Course Documents. When you Google the article on the internet, you will find 428 fascinating readers’ comments. You can get a lot of information and ideas reading some of them.
2. Prepare relevant questions ahead of time.
3. Carefully select the people you can interview, and best to interview them live.
Writing the paper:
1. Thesis statement: Write a detailed long thesis statement that explains the topic and the focus of your paper. Use statistics, since numbers can be very meaningful.
2. Introduction: Every written interview requires an introduction to introduce the person behind the words (age, profession, place of birth, cultural background, family situation, children, etc). Then write where the interview takes place and if it is face to face (the best way) or electronically.
3. Answers only: When you use interviews for the research paper write (quote & paraphrase) only the answers. You should summarize, paraphrase, and quote to create a coherent and fluent narrative.
4. Conclusion: This is a very important part of the paper. It should sum up the interviews, the topics, and here you may write some of your own personal conclusion of the topic.
5. You may bring some examples for the topic from literature, which often serves as a mirror for the reality at the time when they were written. Five stories we have read this semester deal with the topic of relationships, each one written in a different time and in a different style of writing.
6. The Bibliography should include all material used for the paper, and a list of the people interviewed, including dates, and a few words to identify each (by using appositives, such as for example: “Amanda, a 29 year-old senior at Pace University, is my room-mate.)
7. Length should be between 6 -10 pages.
8. Submitting the paper: The paper, in word.doc should be 1. first posted on turniton on blackboard 2. Sent to me attached via email.
9. The Questions: Because the paper is based on the quality of the interviews, I suggest that we pool together and share possible questions and poste them in Post 12 on Discussion Board. (I have already posed two questions).
