Assessment #2 – Assignment
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this assignment is to apply aspects of management accounting, give you experience in working collaboratively and develop your analytic and communication skills. Additionally, this assessment addresses Graduate Qualities of the University of South Australia as outlined earlier.
This assignment due in Week 10 will be available from the course website under ‘Assignment’. Feedback on this assessment will be provided on a Feedback form, a pro forma of which will also be available on the course website under ‘Assignment’. The feedback from the assignment will help you to assess your progress toward meeting the course objectives and fulfilling the graduate qualities of a University of South Australia graduate.
ASSIGNMENT
The assignment will be completed by groups of three students (maximum). In the first weeks of the study period, assistance will be provided in tutorials to organise groups. Other methods of group formation include message posting on the course discussion board. Students may also work individually, but in so doing (1) miss an opportunity to gain experience to meet employer objectives as discussed below, (2) require more time and effort to complete the assignment compared to groups and (3) lack the input of others that can be instructive in development of the best possible answer.
GROUP WORK
Group work is a feature of the University of South Australia’s commitment to produce graduates who can work collaboratively as professionals. To balance the workload, there are also opportunities for students to work individually on assessment related to tutorials, the test and the exam.
As a result of group work, students gain benefits for future employment. Employers seek graduates who can work effectively in teams, as seen in advertisements in press. Completing significant projects in the profession often requires the collaboration of many people. Thus, working in a group provides exposure to a ‘real world’ situation to develop skills employers value. Teams require cooperation, sharing of knowledge, reaching a consensus, and provide an opportunity to show leadership in dealing positively with conflicts that may develop within the group. Learning levels can also be enhanced through group work. Research shows that students who are actively engaged in the learning process learn more. Working in teams provides students with benefits through the opportunity to practice effective communication with peers, learn from others and reinforce knowledge in explaining concepts to others.
Referencing & Plagiarism
All students should ensure that they are familiar with plagiarism policy and referencing requirements before commencing work on the assignment. Referencing and the format of the bibliography should follow the Harvard system. If you require assistance with the Harvard style and other referencing issues, refer to the resources from the Learning Connections website at:
http://www.unisa.edu.au/ltu/students/study/referencing/styles.asp.
Introduction to referencing
Referencing using the Harvard system
A written assignment that lacks appropriate referencing is defined as plagiarised. Plagiarism is regarded as a serious issue with severe consequences for students found to plagiarise. Below are guidelines for understanding plagiarism:
Plagiarism refers to copying from texts, articles or any other source without citing the source.
If the ideas of others are used from published sources, students should ensure the source is cited. In other words, if information contained in an assignment is not your own (words or ideas) you must acknowledge the source within the text of the paper, as well as in the bibliography.
The fact that the source of the material is from a text book, an Internet site, and/or the specific author cannot be identified does not negate the need to acknowledge the source of words and ideas.
If you use another person’s words (i.e. quote their work) indicate that this is a direct quote (usually by quotation marks) and reference the source (including the page number) within the text of the paper.
Changing, deleting, adding only a few words, or rearranging the sentence/paragraph does not negate that fact that you are using the idea(s) of others. In this case, you still need to include an in-text reference.
Quotations should be kept to a minimum.
It is your responsibility to make sure you understand how plagiarism is defined. Any work with plagiarised content will be given a zero mark and possible disciplinary action. The penalty can be a fail in the course or exclusion from the university.
Academic misconduct includes the following:
9.2.2 (c ) submitting another student’s work in whole or in part, where such assistance is not expressly permitted in the course information booklet;
9.2.1(f) providing assistance to a student in the presentation of individual work, where such assistance is not expressly permitted in the course information booklet.
While we understand that pressures from fellow students are sometimes difficult to resist, and it is acceptable to assist other students in discussing issues relating to the assignment, it is not acceptable to provide access to, or copies of, your own assignment (or part of your assignment) to other students. Nor is it acceptable to use another student’s work as the basis for submission of your own (or part of) assignment, whether quoting, paraphrasing or simply using their ideas.
Submission of the assignment
The assignment MUST be submitted online via Learnonline. Assignments submitted via alternative modes will not be accepted.
Only one assignment should be submitted on behalf of a group. Please make sure all student names and ID number are included on the assignment cover sheet.
