As a management trainee you have been seconded to the operations department of a ship management company. The departmental manager has asked you to report on the physical conditions and risk factors which ships operated by your company are likely to meet on ONE of the following passages.
Passage 1 New Orleans to Antwerp (Belgium) in October
Passage 2 Shanghai to Qatar in July
Passage 3 Sydney to Vancouver in October
It is suggested that you consider each passage in distinct sectors.
In each sector describe the physical conditions likely to be experienced (for example: weather, currents, sea conditions and ice as appropriate.) You will find it beneficial to use a blank map (attached) to help illustrate your report.
The report length should be 1000 words (+/- 10%) (Please state total at the end of each report – The report should be in English prose – with limited use of bullet points.)
You are advised to consult an Atlas – and / or texts including ‘Meteorology for Mariners’.

You are asked to produce an essay on ONE of the following titles:-
• The impact of the Suez and Panama Canal on world trade.
• Defining the optimal Ocean Passage.
• Geographical risk factors in ship operation.
• Export and Import of oil and gas – the changing need for maritime transport.
The titles are wide giving you opportunity for individual interpretation.
The length of the essay should be 1500 words (+/- 10%) (please state final total).
It should make prudent use of diagrams / maps
The question will give you an opportunity to undertake some research of your own.
