Memorial Project Assignment Description

We discuss multiple memorial sites, locations of public memory – mourning, commemoration, preservation, etc. Although we focus on national and international sites, IU’s campus and the city of Bloomington have plenty of historical markers, statues, and memorials. This first assignment asks that you put into practice the articles we have read by Carole Blair, Cindy Smith and Teresa Bergman, Kenneth Foote, and others. These articles pose the argument that the location, space, and place of a memorial site matters. With this in mind, it is important to visit a site, to understand how people interact with it, and what rhetorical strategies the monument/memorial constructs through its placement, design, location, etc.

Please pick a memorial in Bloomington (on campus or off) and in 3-4 pages, write up a description and analysis of the work this public artifact is doing to persuade a community to remember a certain person/event. Consider the persuasive strategies we have discussed, the community/audience is being called upon and why, and how this public memorial constructs identity for Hoosiers, Bloomington residents, Indianans, etc.?

Research the history of the monument/memorial you have selected. Please find at least three sources that explain why the memorial was constructed, who was involved, and if you can find anything about its placement on campus or in the city that is good too. Additionally, include a picture of your site/monument in the bibliography of your paper!

FORMAT: This essay assignment should be typed in Times New Roman or Calibri font, double-spaced.

Your paper should include:
A description of the monument, its location, etc. Information regarding the artist, the person/group that commissioned it, the person/group to whom it is dedicated, relevant information regarding its placement and connection to Indiana/IU.

A thorough analysis of this monument as a memory project (consider the pieces: Nora, Blair, Smith and Bergman, Foote, etc.). What work is this monument doing for Indiana’s history? What is it asking us to remember and how are we supposed to identify? What is it neglecting to mention, trying to obliterate? (Remember, as Burke would argue, every text/artifact conveys a terministic screen – therefore it simultaneously reflects, selects, and neglects certain aspects).

Also include a section (you may choose to work this into the previous two sections) on persuasion. What persuasive appeals is this monument making? (eg. if the font is larger for the donor than for the award-winner/recipient, perhaps the implicit claim is that the person paying for the tribute is more important). Consider the persuasive techniques and considerations we made with Garsten, Burke, Gorgias, etc.

A Works Cited page that includes scholars we’ve dread for class as well as three outside sources. You may use any citation style but please remember to use in-text citation as well!
