Mentoring programs have been in law enforcement since I started in 1991 beginning immediately with the new recruit who must successfully negotiate an extensive field training program under the direction of a field training officer. Once the recruit passes the initial training they then by policy are shadowed for an extended period before they ever handle a call for service as an independent patrolman. Our agency has expanded this mentoring process into both the new criminal investigator and supervisor processes and we are better for investing the time and energy.
