Drawing on at least 4 works discussed in class in the modernity and postmodernity sections(two of which must be the extracts from
Marshal Berman’s All a) That Is Solid Melts Into Air, and
b) David Harvey’s The Condition of Postmodernity)
. . .as well as on at least 2 supplemental readings (to be in WebCT), answer the following question:
Take a stand: which term applies most successfully to the experience of life as we now live it (as well as to the artistic
responses to that experience) ?? modernity, or post?modernity?
In other words, which of these terms has the most explanatory power, and why?
You may discuss any other relevant work of art or theoretical text not discussed in this course, but only in passing ?? the essay has to be
primarily concerned with course materials.
?
? You may not use any other source or website unless you clear it with me first: there is plenty to chew on in the materials provided
? except if you want to chase down a book or scholarly article by one of the theorists Harvey mentions ?? that is more than ok: it’s
downright scholarly!
You may use the literary and cinematic works from the course in addition to the Harvey article: they provide cultural evidence to
underpin the theoretical stuff.
?
The now?familiar terms “capitalism” and “modernity” imply an historical rupture or break with all that came before
them. Something has fundamentally changed, in other words, such that we need a new terminology to describe what is
now going on ?? the old words do not reveal this fundamental shift ?? rather, they obscure it.
To re?phrase the question:
The onus for any use new terminology, however, is to prove that it is absolutely necessary and not merely faddish
intellectual jargon. To use the word “postmodern” then, would imply that the world (since when? 1945? 1968? 1989?) is
now so profoundly different from the one that preceded it that without this term, we would have less hope of
understanding the culture we now live in.
? Is “postmodern” such a word? That debate is of course ongoing. I’d like you to add your two cents to the debate.
What we are discussing here is not the artistic movements of modernism and postmodernism, by the way (each of the arts
actually does have a movement called “post?modernist) but the total cultural experience we call modernity and
postmodernity ?? this is the issue that has not been settled: do we continue to live in modern times, or new, postmodern
times?
 Length is again, 1500?ish words,
You definitely need your MLA citation skills for this one: Google the “Diana Hacker” website for help with this.
Remember, at least 6 works must be cited: that is, used in some way, (quoted and/or paraphrased)
