Moment of Learning

Video data is a central component of this assignment, capturing a moment of learning that takes place in a classroom. Approximately five minutes of a whole group meeting, a small group activity, a student-teacher conference, or a child working alone will constitute the moment of learning.

Watch the video and write a 5 page paper explaining the following-

Introduction
— Identify the purpose of your chosen edu-theory
— Name some notable influential people/theorists-be specific and cite often from sources
— Tell what your research question is for this paper and explain why it is interesting and important (relative to theory & practice)
— It is important that the introductory paragraph include a thesis statement, which identifies the main points you will be discussing in the body (analysis) of the review.

Body (Analysis)
— Briefly describe the methods used to collect data, design of the study (naturalistic observation), how many subjects were involved, context, descriptions of what they did, what was measured, what variable influenced what was observed and where the research was conducted.
— Describe the results / what did you find?
— Write an analytical summary of the main findings, arguments, or conclusions connected to other writings on theory.
— Discuss the strengths and usefulness of these writings/theory.
— Discuss the weaknesses, limitations, or problems with writings/theory…are there things you observed that were not accounted for by theory?

**(NATURALISTIC OBSERVATION studies as their name implies observe organisms in their natural settings. A researcher who wants to examine aggressive behavior in males and females may watch children in the school playground, and record the number of aggressive acts boys and girls display.

STRENGTHS: The behavior of the subjects is likely to reflect their true behavior as it takes place in a natural setting, where they do not realize that they are being observed.

LIMITATIONS: The researcher has no control over the setting. For example, in the playground study, more than a child’s gender may be affecting the child’s aggressive behavior. In addition, subjects may not have an opportunity to display the behavior the researcher is trying to observe because of factors beyond the researcher’s control. For example, some of the children who are usually the most aggressive may not be at school that day or in detention because of previous misconduct, thus they are not in the sample of children on the playground. Finally, the topics of study are limited to only people’s overt behavior. A researcher cannot study topics like attitudes or thoughts using a naturalistic observation study.

— Discuss what you learned from the writings/theory and if you recommend this lens to others in the world of education.
— Support your analysis with quotations and/or specific examples from your data throughout.

Conclusion
— Summarize the previous discussion.
— Make a final judgment on the “value” of the theory.
— State what you learned from the writings/theory/experience.
— Comment on the future or implications of using writings/theory to inform practice.

Be sure you have considered:
• why the topic is important (covered in your introduction)
• what the problem/topic of study is (also covered in your introduction)
• what you did to try to study the problem/topic (covered in your methods section)
• what you found (covered in your results section)
• what you think your findings mean (covered in your discussion section)

Typically, APA style papers include the following sections:
• title page
• abstract
• introduction
• method
• results
• discussion
• references
• appendixes (if necessary)
