NASA Spinoff Assignment Persuasive Unit Academic Essay

For this assignment, you will be utilizing the annual publication Spinoff to identify a topic that is interesting to you. Spinoff is a publication that is released each year to detail the various technologies that are developed initially for and by NASA, but are found now benefiting people around the world. Each technology is introduced by detailing why/how it was first developed, how the technology was then used by other people/companies, and finally how the technology is now benefiting all people. You are in the position of being a NASA researcher. Over the past few decades, NASA funding has been cut by the federal government. Because of federal budget cuts, some areas of research have to be abandoned by NASA. Currently, all research areas are on the chopping block. As a researcher, it is your task to develop a written document as well as a presentation that details why your Spinoff and related research area should continue to receive funding, and/or receive a funding increase. More specifically, you have been given the task of developing a written proposal outlining the history of the research area that your Spinoff is from, the current practices that are used, related research, and then explain how or why your current Spinoff is important/impacting/useful/etc. You will also need to deliver a presentation based on this information. ??Audience Your written proposal will be sent directly to the current Director of NASA, Charles F. Bolden, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies. Because of this, the written document may be more technical in nature. Keep in mind your audience is very different here. What motivates congress to give money? What is the return? Jobs? Infrastructure? You are writing a formal report for the government as well as your boss, who has to present your information to them. You are trying to persuade your boss and the committee responsible for allocating you funding that your research is valuable and is worthy of further funding. Strong evidence, research, and data will be essential. Your presentation must be created with a wider audience in mind. You will be delivering your presentation to a wide variety of scientists, investors, government officials, and laypeople. Because of this, you will need to strike a balance between oversimplification and complex details. The people at this presentation will also have a direct impact on whether or not you receive additional funding, and thus it is in your best interest to ensure they understand your research area and why it is important.??Presentation Specifics: Present the most important components of your paper in a 4-6 minute speech. Do not read your paper to the class. You will develop a presentation from your paper, but you will need to rework your information to deliver it to a different audience. For example, you will need a new introduction, conclusion and thesis statement. Your in-text citations will become oral citations. You must cite at least four different sources from your paper in your presentation. Remember, your audience for the presentation and paper are different! Choose the most important information from your paper and present those ideas to your audience. You will need to narrow the scope of the presentation. You may not be able to cover everything you wrote in your paper, so be selective. Present the information in a way that matches the audiences knowledge and experience. Use material from lecture to help accomplish this (e.g., the quasi-scientific, transformative, and elucidating explanations will all be helpful, along with tools such as examples, analogies, and metaphors). Incorporate strong persuasive arguments and appeals into the presentation based on class information. Demonstrate skillful use of organization, directional transitions, and signposts. Use a professional visual aid the follows Assertion Evidence guidelines and is well executed. Refined delivery: Your speaking style should be extemporaneous. This means that you are not to read your speech, or to memorize your speech, but are to talk to the audience and adapt to the audience as you speak. Work for both effective physical and vocal delivery. You will be required to turn in your note cards (maximum of 2, one-sided ONLY), so make sure that you deliver the presentation from a speaking outline and not a copy of the paper. Your instructor will be using the note cards in assessing delivery. ??Paper Specifics: Write a 1000-1200 word paper/memo persuading your reader(s) to your position. Include an introduction, conclusion, thesis statement and two to three main points with supporting evidence. As previously stated, it is important that you choose the right organizational pattern for the argument you make. Also, please be sure to use headings in your paper to help organize. Develop main points that meet class criteria (balanced, mutually exclusive) and fit an appropriate organizational pattern as discussed. Present well-documented evidence of your main points using at least three printed sources as supporting evidence. Your sources must be as current as possible. You must use a minimum of two journal articles. Articles on websites that are also in print are acceptable. You should use a total of 6 sources for this paper. Avoid bias in presenting arguments (i.e., include other sides of the argument and use unbiased sources). Provide in-text citations following APA format. Create a list of references following APA format and attach it as the last page of your paper. Make sure you follow the correct form for each type of source. Provide a word count at the end of your essay.
