As we discussed in Module 1, one of the best ways to improve your writing is to read and read and read. We’ll read 50-60 pages of Seeing & Writing 4 for each module and discuss a selected reading from the assigned pages.
The assigned reading for Module 2 is pages 26-69 in Seeing & Writing 4, with a particular emphasis on Annalee Newitz’s essay “My Laptop” found on page 44. Although Newitz’s reflection is not an editorial (it’s based on personal experience through the “I” perspective), she brings up some interesting points on how technology has dramatically changed how we create and receive information. Throughout this journalism course, it’s important to keep in mind how radically the internet has changed this field.

?If you do have your textbook, be sure to contrast Newitz’s personal essay with Pillsbury’s photograph, “Penelope Umbrico,” on page 45 in Seeing. There’s also some excellent background info on Newitz and Pillsbury on page 46.

AnnaLee Newitz? ?My laptop computer is irreplaceable, and not just for all the usual reasons. It’s practically a brain prosthesis. Sometimes I find myself unable to complete a thought without cracking it open and accessing a file of old notes, or hopping online and googling a fact or two.? ?Besides, I love it. I would recognize the feel of its keyboard under my fingers in a darkened room. I have worn two shiny spots on it where the palms of my hands rest when I’m not typing. I carried it on my back over England, Cuba, Canada, and the United States. When I use it in bed, I remember to keep the blankets from covering its vents so it doesn’t overheat. I’ve taken it completely apart, upgraded its RAM, and replaced its original operating system with Limux. It doesn’t just belong to me; I also belong to it.?
I’m hardly alone in my infatuation. When I was fifteen, my friends and I would often stay up late into the night, chatting online over a multiuser chat system called WizNet. Using online aliases, we spent hours talking about science fiction, movies, computers, and sex. My alias was Shockwave Rider, a reference to a science fiction novel about some guy who hacked phone systems. I was the only girl in the group, although you wouldn’t have known it. Like everybody else, I was just a command line full of glowing green letters.
