For my project I chose the NYC American Museum of Natural History. So that is what you will need to discuss in part 1 and 2. You can find the budgeting info at this website http://www.amnh.org/about/pdf/AMNH_2011.pdf

here is the financial info for part 2
The total expenses from 2008 are $147,023,479, 2009 are $154,227,488, 2010 are $148,922,408 and 2011 are $151,111,642. The total income for 2008 is $164,241,204, 2009 is $170,266,020, 2010 is $162,748,955 and 2011 is $166,183,596. The total assets from 2008 are $810,246,128, 2009 are $663,808,939, 2010 are $667,319,524 and 2011 are $747,568,803. Total assets have fluctuated over the last 4 years as different aspects have factored into expenses and revenues being used by the organization.

below is the actual assignment

This 12-15 page analysis of the organization and its management should use publicly available information. This gives an indication of how transparent the organization?s management practices are as well as how their practices relate to the course readings and materials.

It?s recommended that you choose a local independent organization rather than an international, national or regional organization (like the Red Cross or Catholic Church). This is primarily because the complexity of larger organizations can make it difficult to go into any level of depth in a relatively short paper! However: If you choose a national organization, please focus on a local chapter rather than the national organization!

The Final Nonprofit Profile and Analysis is due Monday, April 23. Students should select the Nonprofit Organization they will profile and analyze by January 30

The total paper should be approximately 12-15 pages, meaning each part is approximately 4-5 pages (PLEASE NOTE: Longer papers are fine ? as long as your treatment of the subject warrants a longer paper!). The Final version of the entire paper is due December 5. However, Drafts of each Section have earlier due dates . . . to allow for instructor feedback and suggestions (and possible rewrites ? to hopefully improve your grade!).

The Final Profile should also include a short (1-2 paragraph) Introduction/Overview of the organization as well as a slightly longer (1 page) Summary/Conclusion of the organization?s strengths and weaknesses as well as future needs.

? Part One is a Summary of the current organization. It should include (about 1 paragraph each):
1) Its Mission – Why it exists and who it serves, including:,
a. How, when, and why it started
b. What it does
c. Why it’s important (and to whom)
If it has a Vision Statement and a Values Statement that identify what kind of future change it envisions and the key standards it adheres to in carrying out its mission, these should be included
2) Its Programs – What it does and for whom, how it fulfills its mission, what specific services it
offers, and who it serves.
3) Its Structure – How it provides these programs: its Board, its Staff, and its volunteer structures, as
well as any Advisory Boards or Councils.
4) Its Finances ? The current yearly expense and income budgets, net income, and total assets.

? Part Two is an Historic and Financial look at the organization, including its founding, key stages of its evolution, and a summary of its finances over a 3-5 year period. This section expands the Summary:
1) A Narrative Historic Survey of the organization’s operation ? including when, why, and how it started, who was involved in the beginning, and key organizational changes (e.g. significant changes in the staff or volunteer workforce, in programs offered, in people served, or in financial income and/or expenses).
2) A Financial History of the organization (3-5 years, if possible) including total expenses [program, fundraising, and administration] and total income [contributions, earned income, and other income]. Also included are the total assets at the end of each year. Be sure to note any areas of the financial picture that seem significant, positive, or negative.
Conclude Part Two with a concise explanation of what you feel the history of the program and its financial operation tell you about the challenges, strengths and weaknesses of the organization.

? Part Three provides a brief evaluation and benchmarking of the organization. Included are:
o What other organizations in its community provide similar services. This should include a demographic picture of the community within which your selected nonprofit exists (population, location, and any unique or significant community aspects). It also identifies the primary subsector of the selected organization (and/or the community need the organization addresses), other organizations in the community that provide similar services, how these organizations compare to the selected organization (in size, services, structure, and other factors you feel are relevant), and how well these different organizations cooperate (and/or compete) to serve that need in their community..
o Identifies three other similar nonprofit organizations (outside of the community) and how they compare to the nonprofit you are profiling. The organizations should be located is another the community from your selected organization ? and ideally even outside of its state. They should be closely similar to your nonprofit organization, in terms of NTEE codes, budgetary size, and type of services and program operation.
Identify the key factors that make these nonprofits similar to your nonprofit organization, as well as the characteristics that make these nonprofits different from your nonprofit organization. Note what those similarities and differences might tell you about the organization you are profiling.
o A short evaluation of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the organization and how the organization?s leaders might improve their management. This evaluation and recommendation should draw upon the research from the previous parts of the Profile as well as appropriate class readings (which should be properly cited).

? GRADING CRITERIA: The Nonprofit Profile and Analysis is ?worth? a total of 25 points. Grading is based on the quality of the writing and the conclusions drawn by the paper as well as the depth of evaluation and recommendations that are made.
? Each of the 3 Parts is worth 7 points each. EACH Part is graded on the basis of:
? Including all relevant information asked for in these Guidelines (3 points)
? Conclusions drawn from the information gathered ? how this information indicates how well (or not so well) the organization is managed (2 points)
? Clarity and quality of the writing (2 points)
? The overall Final Profile is worth an additional 4 points, considering:
? Clarity and quality of the Introduction and Conclusion (2 points)
? Inclusion of references to the readings in your analyses (the Profile as a whole should have a minimum of 5 or 6 citations) (1 point)
? Overall organization and presentation of the Profile as a whole (1 point)
o It should look professional and is laid out to easily identify the relevant information
