In this unit we will explore the concept of evidence-based practice (EBP). It is the responsibility of all nurses to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date care for their patients. This starts with evidence from research and other sources to support care with scientific evidence. Have you been involved in any EBP projects on your unit? Are you aware of any ongoing projects on your unit or in your facility?
EBP projects are a little different from research studies. Generally, EBP is developed and implemented based on research that has already been published and other sources of evidence. A research study is done to generate new knowledge that is not found in the literature. Have you been involved in any nursing research studies in your unit? Are you aware of any ongoing nursing research studies?
When instituting evidence-based practice and research inquiry, it is important that the health care organization is structured to support these initiatives. What support is in place in your facility to support these initiatives? The support can include research councils, journal clubs, and mentorships.

1. Discuss any evidence-based practice projects or research studies in which you have been involved. Describe the project or research, and if completed, describe the results. If you have not been involved in any projects or studies, what type of project or study could be done on your unit?
2. Discuss your work environment and the support or barriers to conducting EBP projects or research studies.
3. Respond to two peers. Have they been involved in a similar project or one in which you would be interested in getting involved? Do you have any ideas for them concerning potential projects or studies?
