Objective: To analyze an image and write an argumentative essay about the issue/message of the image.
Questions are continually posed as to whether an image is too controversial for public viewing. This may be dependent upon who the audience is and how they perceive the material. One must think about an audience’s values or backgrounds that would have them question the content of what is seen.
However, for those who support the freedom of displaying images regardless of subject or content may argue that the public should have visual information. There is vested interest in keeping individuals informed of what is happening outside their world; thus, by concealing information, the public remains in ignorance.
Process: Read the article, “Jon Stewart Makes Case for Showing Dead Osama Bin Laden Photos” and watch the video at the bottom of the article.

After reading the article and viewing the video, choose an image that is of interest to you and answer the question of whether or not an image should be viewed. You are required to use Stewart’s claim as a premise for your essay. You do not have to write about his particular argument, but you are required to use aspects of his points to support or refute your ideas.
• In your introduction, you need to set up the background, history, and/or problem of your image; introduce the date, the publication, and the photojournalist (if available); and lead readers to your thesis/claim which will state your perspective about the image.
• In your first body paragraph, offer a brief but clear description of the picture. From your description, the reader should have a good idea of what the picture looks like.
• Then, offer some exposition or interpretation of the image. For example, think about appeal to emotions (how does it appeal to our sense of values or beliefs?)
• Your remaining paragraphs will be devoted to an analysis of your topic; in other words, you will discuss ways your topic makes its points and whether or not you believe it is appropriate for the public. Also, include who you think would disagree with the message or offer another opinion a person may have on the issue (From Current Issues 157).

Along with Stewart’s points, you are required to include at least two more sources to support your ideas. These can be in the form of journal articles or online sources that are credible.
The key to this assignment is persuasion. How do you convince your audience that your argument/claim is reasonable and worth believing? Keep in mind the rhetorical devices you would use as you write your essay
