Often, teachers are asked to help select a textbook for adoption. For this assignment, imagine that you have been asked to help select a content area ( science ) text for your
grade level for 3rd grade for the next year.
Choose three textbooks for the same course (science) and the same subject. Then compare and
contrast them for use in your classroom.
There are four parts to this assignment that should be combined to create one document for
submission:
1. Using three different formulas, determine the readability level for each of the texts
that you have selected for this course.
a. Use the same two passages in each of the texts for your review and evaluation (one from
the beginning and one from the end).
b. Use each of the three readability formulas:
i. The Fry Readability Graph (pp. 152-156).
ii. The SMOG Formula (p. 153-156).
iii. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Formula (p. 153-156).
c. Record and compare the results that you have found when using each of the formulas.
2. Analyze the three texts, using the Bader textbook analysis chart from your text
(template included in the Assignment Instructions folder). You should report your findings,
using the template, for each of the three texts.
3. Based on your findings (readability levels and Bader analysis), compare/contrast the
three texts.
4. Conclude with a decision as to which text you would recommend to be used, with a
justification and rationale for that decision.
Be sure that you have included bibliographic information in APA format for each of the
books.
