3. Explain as best you can the utilitarian theory and Kant’s theory (explained in the reading assignment for last week). How might each theory handle this issue of drug testing?
4. Read about the seven steps in “The Principles Method,” the required reading for this week. Then, from all the information in Shah’s essay, write a principle or rule which you would require every drug company to follow in any case of drug testing on human subjects. Recall the principle that Singer used and from which his conclusions are drawn:
“If it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it. The goal is to write a principle which will confine drug companies to doing what is right.
5. Comment in some detail on the following law: “Every American shall have to serve at least once in his or her life as a subject in a clinical trial for a drug. While the trial may involve substantial risk, the test will be approved by the National Board of Ethics of Drug Testing.” (This is a fictional board. There is no such body. Perhaps the federal Food and Drug Administration should set up such a board. Would you want to serve on it)
