Question 1:

With Bernini’s David [5’7″] we have now seen three representations of the “David” narrative. Discuss the varied interpretations of this figure and approaches to the narrative (story)and what makes Bernini’s figure distinctly Baroque?

Other student’s respond sample:

The story of David is one that keeps getting told in various ways. It is the story of how the Philistine army were in war with Israel, and they met in a valley, and decided they had to arrange a one-on-one challenge to settle this. The giant Goliath was the Philistines best warrior, and David was the Israelites. David tossed a stone right in the giants forehead and then beheaded him.

Donatello, Michelangelo and Bernini are all from different periods and have created sculptures capturing this story. Except they all capture different moments in the story. Donatello displays David right after he has slayed Goliath. He is a bronze figure, standing on his head, looking rather satisfied and a bit cooky. It gives a message of victory. All though it was very ground-breaking for it’s time, with the nudity, compared to the other two it’s rather boring.

Michelangelo’s David is captured right before he kills the giant. He is looking at him with furrowed brows, steady, confident, yet scared. It creates that High Renaissance tension, the drama, the silence before the lightning strikes. Michelangelo also gives him so much personality, we can basically see what he is thinking.

Bernini has captured David in mid-action, something that makes it typically Baroque. His body is twisted, his lips are tense and pressed together, he is just about to release the slingshot and throw the rock at the Goliath. It still gives the artwork that tension, but with even more drama, this is the moment you are pushing your nails into your palms, or holding your hands covering your eyes. I actually like this version the best. It is so much more dramatic, all though I really enjoy the tension with Michelangelo’s David.

Question 2:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b0/GENTILESCHI_Judith.jpg/250px-GENTILESCHI_Judith.jpg

(Artemesia Gentileschi, Judith Slaying Holofernes, 1614-20. Oil on canvas, 199 x 162cm, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, Italy)

Often modern viewers and historians try to psychoanalyze artists through their work. What do you think of this notion? Do you believe that Artemisia Gentileschi was somehow “working out” her feelings about her circumstances through her work?

How much should we read into a work of art? Would you want people to read that deeply into your own work to formulate opinions about you and your state of mind?

Other student’s respond sample:

Artemisia made six versions of the theme of Judith slaying Holofernes. And when she was younger she was probably raped by her teacher Agostino Tassi. Does this mean she was working out her feeling through art? It probably does, creating art is all about emotions, it is an expression of our emotions. But that doesn’t mean we have to analyze every artwork to find out what the artist is like and what problems he or she is working out.

There is a possibility that she just really liked this subject, or that the people that commisioned it liked it, it was a female version of David. Either way, over analyzing a piece of artwork I feel will take the mystery off it, I think we should look at a painting from our own eyes. After all, that is one of the most interesting thing about art, that everyone sees different things. So focusing on the artist will only ruin your own interpretation.

But I think all artist, including myself, has to be ready for that people will have theories about you from analyzing your art. And that’s ok, at least for me, let them wonder and analyze, I will always know why I did what I did in an artwork. I think we should focus on the meaning or mmoral message of the art. Or maybe just enjoy its beauty.
