Apple is a global giant whose success has been built on outsourcing to a range of other organisations located across the world. How can different organisational theory perspectives assist us in acquiring different understandings of Apple, its organisational networks and influence? In this essay you must use at least two perspectives to analyse Apple.
In answering the research essay question you must focus explicitly on the key issues identified in the question and strictly adhere to the structure outlined below.
A failure to follow these and the following instructions will have a significant negative impact on your marks.
Introduction:
In this section you must provide an overview of your answer to the question; provide answers to the key what and why questions of your argument/answer. Then you must identify the perspectives you have selected and provide an overview of why they will be useful in examining Apple?s organisational network and influence.
Theoretical Framework:
In this section you must compare and contrast your chosen perspectives. This must include an exploration of the meta-theoretical assumptions underpinning their different world-views and how these result in their advocates and practitioners seeing organisations differently. You should then provide an overview of the key theories, from each of the chosen perspectives, which you will employ in the examination of Apple.
Applying the Perspectives and Theory to Analyse Apple:
1. Provide a BRIEF overview of Apple: use no more than a short paragraph to provide a general overview of Apple.
2. The application of perspective ?1?: Use the general assumptions of one of your chosen perspectives and the specifics of the theories belonging to it, that you have identified in the Theoretical Framework section, to examine Apple?s organisational network and influence.
3. The application of perspective ?2?: Use the general assumptions of the second of your chosen perspectives and the specifics of the theories belonging to it, that you have identified in the Theoretical Framework section, to examine Apple?s organisational network and influence.
If you wish you may combine your analysis of the two perspectives to provide an integrated analysis rather than separate ones but in either case you must allocate approximately equal words to each unless you feel one perspective is more useful than the other, in which case you will have to provide a justification for this assertion.
Conclusion:
You must conclude with your general answer to the question. It should reiterate argument/provisional answer provided in the introduction and indicate to what extent it has been supported by the analysis and how each of the perspectives have helped to provide a more complete understanding of Apple?s organisational network and influence.
ADDITIONAL GUIDENCE: ?
This essay question has been designed to encourage students to prepare their own individual essay. There is no single ?right? answer. Markers will be looking for evidence that students have read broadly, including the provided material, and have synthesised the material to develop their own view or argument.
Section 1 Theoretical Framework:
The following points are to help you to understand and complete the theoretical framework section of your assignment:
1. The question asks you to compare and contrast the views of two perspectives. The focus for this comparison is on the perspectives’ meta-theoretical assumptions, but you could also discuss how the different perspectives deal with power, culture and structure. This part of the essay allows you to demonstrate your understanding of the course material covered in weeks 1-4.
2. Do not analyse any more than two perspectives. Given that the length of the assignment is only 2800 words, you would struggle to do justice to any more than two perspectives.
3. The focus in this essay is on analysis rather than description. Any description of your chosen perspectives must form part of your analysis and must contribute to the argument that you are making in your essay.
4. This is not an essay asking you to consider management practices or styles of management. It is asking you to focus on ?ways of seeing? and thinking about the organisation (i.e. perspectives of the organisation) and ways of understanding and theorising about organisations. Think of yourself as a researcher (rather than manager) of an organisation and you have two devices you can choose from to study Apple and its organisational networks and influence. Each device provides you with the ability to learn something different about the organisation. Your job is to explain how each of the devices you have chosen provides us with different ways of understanding organisations. It is expected that you will be able to identify the major differences and similarities between the perspectives as part of this exercise.
5. For this section of the essay you must make use of at least 3 references, including the textbook.
6. Before you begin to look for additional reading you should first acquire a good understanding of the two perspectives through the discussions of these found throughout the textbook (Hatch and Cunliffe). Once you acquire this understanding you will then begin to recognise these perspectives in the articles beyond the textbook. You can do this by looking for key concepts or theories used by the different perspectives. For example, if you see an article referring to ?deconstruction? or ?self-surveillance? you can be pretty sure it is coming from a postmodern perspective. If you come across articles using general system?s theory or structural contingency theory you can be pretty confident that these are articles drawing upon modernist ideas. You can then draw upon and talk about this reading in your essays.
7. You can make use of the Web sources but they need to be reliable sources- Wikipedia is not a reliable source of information. We encourage you to make use of journal articles which can be found via a range of library databases. I suggest you use Expanded Academic ASAP (Gale) database which is located through the Databases section of the library website because it allows you to search a range of journals using keywords. Some of the keywords you should consider are: organisational culture, power in organisations, organisational change, organisations and modernism, organisations and symbolic interpretivism, organisations and postmodernism, etc. You will find an enormous amount of relevant literature. You can also do author searches which can be helpful to locate recent articles by scholars mentioned in the textbook. We also encourage you to make use of the references and further reading suggested by the textbook at the end of each chapter. ?Citation Linker? found through the library website is a useful tool to locate some of the journal articles mentioned in the textbook. There is a lot of information out there regarding the topic.
