Topic sentences alone should tell your reader what your argument is and each should build upon the next in a forward motion. If your topic sentences do not provide a solid argument, rewrite them or consider if you need to add/cut an entire paragraph. Then read each paragraph alone. Every single sentence in that paragraph must directly address the topic sentence. If any sentence in a paragraph does not directly address that paragraph’s topic sentence, do one of the following: 1. cut the sentence out; 2. re-write it so that the relevance to the topic sentence is clear; 3. move the sentence to a paragraph where it fits better. Think of your essay like this: The topic sentences tell your reader your argument; the other sentences in the paragraph provide evidence to prove the claim of the topic sentence.
