The papers for this course are especially challenging, because there are fewer guidelines and specific expectations. Selecting your own topic can be challenging, but it should also enable you to focus your efforts on a topic of interest to you. The papers will be graded based on the following five factors, each of which will be weighed relatively equally. The first two will generally be the difference between good and great papers, and the last two will often separate good and bad papers. 1. Thesis: Your paper should make a distinctive argument. It should not simply state facts or given a narrative account of events. A good thesis should be debatable, and you should be able to identify the other side and the arguments that support it. You do not necessarily need a single thesis statement, but it is always a good idea to develop one. 2. Support: Your argument should be built on evidence wherever possible, and should always be logical and straightforward. The more convoluted your arguments, the less effective they are. You should effectively answer potential critiques, but do not try to state the case for the other side in full. Simply address how your arguments answer potential counterarguments. 3. Use of Sources: There is no minimum or maximum number of sources for the paper, and both the quantity and types of necessary sources will vary by topic. Effective use of sources is important. Quotations should be as short as possible and used only when they contribute something that your own words could not, or when you cannot state a point clearly without simply using the original text. On the other hand, sources should be used to support the points of your argument. Be sure to include full citations of sources, in a format of your choice. 4. Organization: Your paper should be well-organized. The structure should be obvious to the reader, and should make logical sense. You should not narrate your paper (?Next I am going to talk about??), but you should have effective transitions between points. 5. Proofreading and Grammar: I am frequently appalled at the quality of papers turned in by students. I wish that were not the case, but unfortunately papers with literally dozens of spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors are very common. One or two errors will not have a substantial impact on your grade, but frequent mistakes will turn a good grade into a bad one.
