Preparing to write a critique paper
Five Major Steps
A.
Read the introduction of the article and address the following questions:
• Is the thesis statement clearly stated?
• Have the authors provided the reader with the essential background information and previous research to justify the importance of the present article?
• Take note of other questions that catches your attention when you read the introduction

Read the methods/methodology section of the article and address the following questions:
• Is the study procedure clearly stated?

Read the results/findings section and address the following questions:
• Are the findings/ results clearly presented and visible?
• Are all the data needed to measure the variable fully determined?
• Note other questions you have or information that need further explanations/clarifications.
D.
Read the discussion of the paper and address other questions.
• Read the discussion section of the article. How were the results/findings interpreted?
• Did the results support the thesis statement?
• Is the conclusion drawn reasonable?
• You take a position here to show if you agree with conclusions and provide alternative explanations. As an alternative, analyse the questions that the researchers failed to answer in the discussion paper.

Outline for a Critique Paper
1. Introduction (1%)
• Start with an introductory sentence stating what you are doing. In this paper, —–
• Thesis statement, which is the main idea of your critique, summing up the main poins of your critique.
• Identify your plan of action
2. Article summary: 3%
• Provide a brief summary of the article, showing the main points, results and discussions.
• Focus on highlighting the main points of the article.
• Do not summarize every little detail of the main paper
• Focus more on covering the overall idea of the article
3. Your Analysis (4%)
• Provide an analysis of the article
• What problems you have with the authors’ premise, methods, or conclusions.
• Focus of problems with authors’ argument, presentation or on information, and what the authors overlooked.
• Organize your thoughts, arguing one point at a time
• Here you analyse the multiple strengths and weaknesses, based on a considerable understanding of the topic.
4. Conclusion (2%)
• Provide an overview of the argument, your conclusion and your reaction.
