Write a brief essay (500 � 750 words of your prose, which means NOT INCLUDING the reference list or direct quotations) on one of the four (4) topics below.
1. The �Reasonable� Human Resources Manager
Section 1 of the Province of Alberta�s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) defines many of the terms used in the legislation. Section 2 tries to clarify what standard constitutes �reasonable�. In Section 2 there is a reference to a �reasonable person�. With reference to the intentions of the PIPA and to industry standards and legal definitions, outline and analyze the standards that govern �reasonable� when applied to Human Resources managers.
2. Marketing Financial Services to Seniors: the rhetoric of fear and security
North American financial services companies (banks, credit unions) offer a range of services for people nearing the end of their working life and entering retirement. These services may include estate planning, retirement planning, annuities etc. With reference to examples from at least two Canadian financial institutions, discuss the implications of the vocabulary choices made in marketing financial services to seniors.
3. The Implications of Verb Use in Task Assignment
In any chain of command, the verb used when instructing someone to perform a task will affect how the task (or the instructor) is perceived. With examples from your own experience or documented examples of the experience of others, outline and analyze ethical issues that can arise from verb choice and use in task assignment � both in the choice of the verb and the use of verb tense and modality or mood.
4. Encoding and Decoding the Performance Review: the ethics of writing and reading between the lines
HR professionals use many techniques to avoid unpleasant consequences of negative performance reviews, including catch phrases, jargon, and inference. In some cases the review�s language or structure is designed to convey as little concrete information as possible. With reference to examples, explore the ethics of these practices.
