CLASS PROJECT: EXPLICATION OF PAPER SECTIONS
Title Page
Use APA format here and throughout the paper. Give your paper a clever title.
Introduction and Discussion of Career
Begin your paper with an orienting device if you would like to (i.e. a quote, an anecdote, etc.). In discussing your career/life, give details to answer basic inquiries including: What? When? Why? Where? How?
Topic Sentence
Construct a topic sentence which includes the four concepts your paper will discuss listed in the order in which they will be discussed.
Four Concepts
Begin by naming and defining your first concept. Here is where you will want to reference the respective chapter from your text where the concept is introduced. Use APA format. After naming and defining the concept, explain in some detail why it is important to your career/life. When relevant, give specific examples of how you will use this concept. Typically the more concrete and vivid you can make the application of this concept to your career/life, the better.
After discussing your first concept, go on to discuss each of your remaining concepts in the same manner using appropriate organizational transitions (for example: A second concept?; Another concept?, etc.).
Integration of the Research Article
Use your journal article to explain more in depth how a specific piece of research related to one of your concepts has significance for your career/life. You may wish to vary the organizational pattern, however, typically discussing your journal article after you have named, defined, and applied your fourth concept to your career/life works best. Create an appropriate transition to begin your discussion of your journal article in relation to your fourth concept, and then discuss your journal article in some depth using your Journal Article Review worksheet as a guide. Remember that you will be discussing the research in detail and then applying the findings to your career/life by answering this query: Why is this piece of research relevant to my fourth concept and subsequently to my career/life.
Conclusion
Summarize the primary points your paper makes being sure to mention again the four concepts you have focused on and in a global way their value to your career/life. While you will essentially be restating your topic sentence here, do so in an interesting fashion so that your conclusion is not just a redundant, re-parroting of it. You may also want to comment on the value of the discipline of psychology in general; you may want to use, for example, an anecdote, quote, etc. which provides interest and ties the ideas you have developed in your paper together.
References: Give accurate APA citations for your textbook, your journal article, and any other sources you may have used. (Note-Use accurate in-text citations throughout your paper).
Both hard and electronic copies must be submitted to meet the project requirement. Failure to submit both will result in a zero on the assignment. Late hard copy and electronic submissions will lose 10 points per day and will not be accepted after April 20, 2012. Late hard copy projects must be submitted to your instructor?s mailbox in M2054 by 8:00 p.m. Late electronic copies must be submitted by
11 p.m. The Psychology 1010 Class Project will require you to use your critical thinking skills and your writing ability to address a question of primary importance: How will you use psychology in your career and in your life? In order to be able to successfully answer this question, you must be able to analyze and synthesize psychological concepts and be able to apply them to your speculations concerning your career and your future life. In your essay, you will need to clearly identify your career and why you have chosen it and then explain how what you have learned in psychology will enhance your career and your life. You will select four psychological concepts /topics to focus on in your paper.
Your paper will make use of two primary sources. The first source is your textbook itself. (Use the current edition of the textbook that we are using for our course). The second source is an article from a referred psychology journal (preferably an American Psychological Association journal published
within the last five years) which addresses one of the psychological concepts or topics relevant to your intended career. You will want to find an article which is research based and which preferably uses the experimental method. The article must have the tradition sections associated with a research study (abstract, literature review, methods, results, discussion, references).
In discussing information from your text, you must reference the appropriate chapter(s) explaining why the psychological concepts you focus on are or will be relevant to your career and your future life. For the journal article, you will be integrating the article and its content into your paper to highlight its significance to your chosen field of study rather than merely citing it. You will be using the journal article to discuss its relationship to one of the concepts or topics you have selected as important to your career. Note that you will be discussing the article and the implication of its findings for your career in some detail, not merely mentioning it in passing. A ?Journal Article Review? activity will help you better prepare to discuss your article in depth in your paper.
Your paper must be done using APA formatting style which includes providing:
1) A title page with the title in the middle of the page
2) Page numbering in the upper right corner beginning with 1 on the title page
3) In-text citations in APA format (that means the citation follows either the quote or the paraphrase of the information provided)
4) A reference page at the end (called References) in APA format
Your paper should be double spaced, using Times New Roman, 12pt. type. Your paper should be at least 800 words long (approximately three to four typed pages). You will be turning in a hard copy of your paper to your instructor on the due date. Your hard copy will be placed in a plain pocket folder without prongs to be turned in. You will include your paper, your refereed journal article, a completed article review sheet, and a certificate of completion from an online plagiarism tutorial (discussed below).
You will also be providing an electronic copy of your paper to Turnitin. Turnitin is an online service which compares the wording of your paper with a variety of online sources as well as with papers submitted by other students. This service evaluates papers for their originality providing red and yellow warnings for papers which have too closely followed the work of others (i.e. plagiarism). Papers which receive a red warning will receive a zero. Papers which receive a yellow warning will receive a significant point reduction. These situations can be avoided by avoiding plagiarism. To help you better understand what plagiarism is, you will, as part of your class project, be successfully completing a plagiarism tutorial. Note that you must print out the certificate indicating the score that you receive on the tutorial and that your score must be 80% or higher.
Any paper which is not turned in both as a hard copy and an electronic paper will receive a zero. Your class project is worth a total of 150 points with points awarded for the successful completion of the location and use of an appropriate refereed psychology journal article, the journal article review sheet, the online tutorial, and the writing of the essay itself.
Students who are not strong writers are encouraged to use the Writing Center for assistance.
Due Dates:
The hard copy of your project is due April 18, 2012.
The electronic copy of your project must be submitted to Turnitin no later than
11 p.m. on April 18, 2012.
