Racism Custom Essay

Racism is considered by many the most important and persistent social problem within the world today. Whether we are talking about ethnic cleansings, group hatred or retraction of equity laws under the guise that these are unfair, the underlying issue is the same. One group, threatened by the perceived loss of power, exercises social, economic and political muscle against the Other. At the heart of prejudice lies two concepts:
 Ignorance of fear: Most of what passes for prejudice in society is the result of ignorance of other groups and their way of life and social condition.
 Fear: This one goes much deeper than ignorance, for it strikes at the root of prejudice, the issue of privilege and power.
Background of ?Color of Fear?
In the documentary film ?The Color of Fear,? a group of men at a weekend retreat engaged in an open and candid dialogue on race and ethnicity. The filmmaker, Lee Mun Wah, a Chinese American community therapist, gathered a group of eight men, who were willing to spend a weekend in a honest and unconstrained discussion about their experiences, beliefs, and values related to race, color, ethnicity, and culture. Two of the men are African American, two are Latino American, two are Asian American and two are European American or White. Lee Mun Wah functioned as the facilitator for the weekend. The group members can be identified as follows:
 David, the young Chinese American man
 David C., the Euro-American man who insists there is no racism in his hometown.
 Lee Mun Wah, Chinese American and facilitator of the workshop.
 Loren, the younger African American man
 Gordon, the Euro-American man who identifies himself as a ?racist who is
working against racism?
 Hugh, the younger Latino man

The Paper
Roberto, the older Latino man
Victor, the older African American man Yutaka, the Japanese man
The following questions should be the core of your essay paper for this assignment:
 Discuss the implications of racism, prejudice, discrimination, and how it involves fear.
 Why was it scary and fearful for the men to discuss racism?
 What is the fear expressed by these men?
 How is prejudice and discrimination described by these men?
 Provide examples of how racism is experienced by the men, both individually and
institutionally.
 When the group point toward a ?we? verses ?they? mentality what are they
describing?
 Which of the men, in your opinion, are likely to fall victim to prejudice and/or
discrimination? Explain why using examples.
 Did you feel any strong connection to any of the men in the group?
Why or Why not.
[Please do not state that you feel no connection because you are a woman. Think about this question as having no boundaries].
 Victor exclaimed, ?You think you can live without us, but you can?t…you don?t stand on your own ground, you stand on the ground of black people and brown people and claim it?s your own ground.? What was the significance of this statement?
 What moment in the film had an impact on you as you sat and watched these men talk candidly about prejudice and discrimination?
 Should watching a show like this have an impact upon the way we treat each other in society today? Explain you answer fully.
Lastly, you should also discuss what was ?unsaid??the non-verbal communication between the men. For example, when Roberto and the Yutaka stand face-to-face what does this moment represent to you?
Paper Mechanics
The paper should be a minimum of 3 no more than 4-pages in length. The paper should have a cover page, double-spaced, and in 12-pitch font.

Additionally, USE YOUR TEXTBOOK properly citing the page number if you quote a passage, define a word, and/or discuss something that is statistical and/or theoretical. To cite something from the video you would type the following after the quote (Color of fear).
Even though CONTENT and SUPPORT are very important to me, grammar and organization are also important elements in this writing assignment. Therefore, use proper sentence structure and paragraph formation (do not use bullet points or an outline form that is question and answer!) All papers must be typed double-spaced using 12 point, Times New Roman font. Your 3-page paper will also include a COVER PAGE and REFERENCE PAGE for a total of 6-pages.
