This assignment is in three parts, and this is Part 1. The three assignments are interrelated, but each is separate and each is worth 100 points.
Purpose: This assignment is designed to help you evaluate source material. By evaluating each source for its message, its usefulness, and author credibility, you will practice critical analysis skills and gain a clearer sense of how sources relate to your writing.
What is an annotated bibliography?
Annotated bibliographies are sources that have been evaluated for their content, relevance, and credibility. They contain a formatted citation with information about the source and a summary (annotation) with information about the author’s credibility. They also contain a summary of the source’s content and the source’s relevance to the paper in which the source will be used.
Preparing to write First, read Chapter 1, “Understanding Argument,” on page 3 of your ebook.
(The page numbers can be confusing, so make sure to read the chapter titled “Understanding Argument.”) Also read Chapter 2, “Reading an Argument,” in your ebook. (Again, make sure to check the title of the chapter since the
numbers can be confusing).
Next, you must find an argument to read. You will be using this argument in your next assignment, as well. In that assignment, you will be writing your own argument that refutes the one you find to read. This means that you must
disagree with the argument the author presents—the author’s stance on the argument. You might agree with a few points the author makes, but you must disagree with at least one point so that you can write your refutation in the next
assignment (Part 2).

ENC1102: English Composition II
Assignment: Annotated Bibliography
The argument you choose must refer to a timely event—something that is in the news now. It is not necessary to write about a global or national issue. It can be something that is going on in your community, or something that is
controversial in your industry. Do not write about the abortion debate or the gay marriage debate.
