1. Read Uncle Tom’s Cabin in its entirety, and then compare and contrast Tom’s three owners. How are Shelby, St. Clare, and Legree alike? How are they different? Do they appear in the novel according to any particular sequence, and if so, how does this progression relate to the general themes of the book?
2. Research Stowe’s political objectives and discuss how they affect the style and formal aspects of the novel. In designing her characters to make a point, did she make them too simple? Do the noble politics of the novel justify its literary shortcomings?
3. Reflect upon the three slave narratives in the text, those of Equiano, Jacobs, and Douglass, as well as the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Referring to all four pieces, describe what it was like to be a slave. Be specific. Are there any contradictions or inconsistencies about slavery in these works?
4. Read another literary piece from an author whom we have studied in the course. Explain how the two literary pieces are similar and/or different and how they suggest the author’s overall literary style. Use specific details from each work. You may decide to limit your focus to such aspects as character, plot, setting, symbolism, conflict, point of view, or theme. For example, if you choose Edgar Allan Poe, we have read “Premature Death” and “The Masque of the Red Death,” so you should select another of Poe’s many short stories to examine alongside one of the ones we read.

- When quoting or paraphrasing lines in literature, follow the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.
