In the course project, you will select your own company or another real-world organization you are familiar with, and design a GIS application involving spatial and attribute data. You will think up, and design a new GIS/spatial capability. In your design, you need to describe the organization and indicate its operation, management, or functioning can benefit from spatial analysis through GIS. What are the sources you recommend of GIS data? How do you recommend that the GIS and its data be organized? What types of spatial analysis can be done? What are the prospective benefits and impacts of the GIS application? You are encouraged to bring in some relevant information systems concepts from (Business Information Systems). One example of such a concept is Michael Porter’s Five Forces framework for competitive IS. This could be applied to justify why the application is competitive for GIS.
It is recommended that you will go further than design of the GIS application, by testing part of your design with Business Analyst Online.
Please include several literature citations that you have consulted and that are relevant to your arguments. The length of the paper is 6-7 text pages, plus diagrams, illustrations, and BAO maps. You will also present a 10 – 15* minute report in the final class session.
Description of the organization A brief description of the organization. Highlight those areas of the organization that will benefit from GIS.
Description of the purpose for GIS Why this application is needed? How will it work? Who will use it? What problem(s) does it solve? Does it enhance the competitive position of the organization?
Data organization What are the data sources. How will the data be organized to supply the attributes needed to support the spatial data? A diagram of how and where the sources integrate into the system can be helpful.
Spatial Analysis What information will be created with spatial analysis, and how will this information be used to enhance decision making or add value? Be specific. Include details. If you can calculate money, good; but it’s not required. Return can be represented in time, money, or satisfaction.
Impact from spatial analysis Adding on to value – strategic and measurable benefits, any cost or labor requirements, and estimated payback period.
Implementation considerations Briefly – how you think the implementation might proceed and any concerns you may have about the process. A high level (major milestones) timeline is a good inclusion.
Future applications Drag out the crystal ball and identify any future applications that may be discovered by the users/management after this application is implemented.
