Every firm, be it large or small, management is faced with making decisions about future directions and/or operational actions that rely on up-to-date information to assist them in this process. In cases where it is identified that more information is needed to make decisions about a future action or other opportunity the management team needs to work out what information they need and from where that information should be sourced. Further, it also needs to be determined whether the information can be gathered through sourcing secondary data or whether some primary data collection is also required. To make these decisions the firm would require an understanding of the research process and a clear statement of the problem to be solved.
Assignment Information
Assignment 1 requires you to read the following and answer the five (5) questions.
2011 was a difficult year for people and businesses located in Japan, Queensland, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand. People in Japan and Christchurch New Zealand experienced destruction and devastation caused by earthquakes, and the people of Queensland, Australia experienced devastation and destruction through floods and a tropical cyclone. Many lives were lost and businesses ruined. Guido, a compassionate man and a savvy Italian businessman, is deeply upset by the natural disasters and would like to help. Prior to the devastation, Guido was thinking of moving the manufacturing of his luxury leather handbag and accessory business from Italy to China. Now, to help these devastated areas rebuild business opportunities, Guido is considering Japan, Australia or New Zealand as alternatives.
To make a decision on whether (or not) to move the manufacturing of luxury leather handbags and accessories from Italy to either China, Japan, Australia or to New Zealand, Guido needs further information. The Management Decision Statement (MDS) is, which county should Guido choose to base the manufacture of luxury leather handbags and accessories and why? In addressing the MDS, consider whether moving the manufacturing will impact on country-of-origin perceptions, increase financing opportunities, increase employee productivity or increase sales opportunities.
Based on the MDS conduct secondary research to determine whether sufficient secondary data exists to address the MDS and write a two page assessment with your answer and justification and evidence of your secondary data analysis.
Based on your secondary data analysis, determine what sort of primary research is required, exploratory, explanatory or descriptive research and identify the corresponding business research objective and two research questions. Write an explanation to justify your answer.
Explain what role a research proposal would play in assisting this research effort and in improving the business situation.
Discuss which would be better in this situation, to conduct qualitative research or quantitative research. Justify your answer.
Identify any cultural or ethical considerations necessary to complete the primary research
Assignment task
This assessment requires you to submit a modified report which will answer the five (5) questions that follow the case You are required to submit your work through the EASE system located on your study desk. The modified report format requires the following sections (please refer to the Communication Skills Handbook for more information on the sections identified here):
In the business world, when a firm realises they have a business problem that needs investigation, they may conduct both secondary and primary research to address a business problem. They may also seek help from an outside organisation to complete the research. Business problems/opportunities can have more than one solution and more than one approach resulting in many solutions and differing proposals. A firm usually conduct secondary research and completes the primary research after an extensive scoping exercise.
Your first assignment is to identify a management research problem in a small medium enterprise of your choice related to your specific discipline of study. Then you are required to transform this problem into a business research problem and conduct secondary research. The aim of the secondary research is to identify aspects of the problem that have been previously research and those that require primary research. Good research practice uses previous information and knowledge as primary research can be very costly.
The plan for your assignment should include the following: (A guide to your assignment is
1500 words)
1. An overview of the company you have decided to investigate. This should be
approximately 250 words
2. Problem identification and management decision problem (MDP) definition (250- 300 words). This focuses on the identification and definition of the management decision problem (MDP) from the manager’s perspective, ensuring it is written as action oriented (see module 1). In this section you need to define the management issue of the company you are investigating and elaborate the problem identified offering some level of reasoning as to the causes, incidence and nature. Remember the management problem may be a symptom that there is a problem (see Iceberg principle module 1) and after investigation it is evident the problem is more complex.
3. Conduct secondary research and describe the current situation, events and environment related to the problem. This involves gathering evidence of secondary research in your chosen topic, synthesizing and analysing the secondary research (see module 2). There are many marketing and business tools you have learnt throughout your studies and these may assist you collating and presenting your findings eg. A SWOT analysis (500 words). This section needs to offer a set of conclusions about what is known, what is not known and what needs to be researched. The unknown aspects of your research will form the basis of the business research question.
4. Defining the business research problem. Now that you have identified the problem as related to the firm you will need to define the business research
problem (BRP) from the researcher’s perspective and as information oriented (see module 1). You must clearly state whether the research problem is exploratory, descriptive or casual and how this influences your research action plan (150 words) Note secondary sources could include the library databases. media sources the company’s website and Google searches related to the problem and the firm. Ideally you should gather many differing sources of secondary data before analysing them and presenting your results by describing the current situation.
5. Prepare and present a brief recommendation action plan (250-350). The action plan is the blueprint of what needs to be done and how the primary research will address the BRP. The action plan, will lead to the advance research design in assignment 2 .
Compile the information from all tasks and present in a single document.
6. NB. This document should have a title page, a contents page, cover the problem identification, secondary research, the action plan recommendations in a list, a reference list and contain the name(s) and student number(s) of the people that worked on the document. The document may be in word or PowerPoint.
include whether your work is descriptive, exploratory or causal then whether you have chosen qual or quat and why, then the proposed method choice e.g focus group interview, and why and offer possible target groups. These are brief and should link to the BRP you chose and made a logical link. I hope this helps
