Detailed instructions for Jean Lawrey’s paper
• This is a research paper for submission to a refereed journal.
• I’ve included some parts of the ‘Introduction’ section and the ‘Result’ section for your information.
• You will write up parts A and B as shown in below.
A. You will write up two parts of the ‘Introduction’ section (in total, double spaced 4 pages with around 1,000 words) –
o Risk factors: Stressful life events. This part should include literature review (2/3 recent studies) leading to the hypothesis that the role of stressful life events in precipitating depression would be stronger for welfare recipients than non-recipients (may be low income earners are more vulnerable to adverse events?).
o Protective factors: access to support services, neighborhood connectedness and self-efficacy. This part should include literature review (3/4 recent studies) on the relationship between depression and all three protective factors. You would justify why their roles (particularly the role of ‘access to support services’) would be stronger in buffering depression among welfare recipients but not for non-recipients.
B. Read the ‘Result’ section so you understand what stance you’ll need in writing up the ‘Discussion’ section of the paper. The ‘Discussion’ (in total, double spaced 4 pages with around 1,000 words) should –
o start with discussing findings in relation to the significant risk factors of depression (stressful life events such as ‘relationship breakdown’, ‘major financial hardship’, ‘substance abuse’, and ‘death of a love one’). Note that the results demonstrated a positive link between depression and these events.
o then discuss findings in relation to the significant protective factors of depression: ‘access to support services’, ‘self-efficacy’ and ‘neighborhood belonging’. Again, note that the results demonstrated a negative link between depression and these protective factors. Note that the significant link between depression and ‘access to support services’ is true for recipients only.
o mainly focus around the importance of ‘access to support services’ for welfare recipients but not for non-recipients. Why? Because the result shows that it acts as a buffer against developing depression even when welfare recipients experience stressful life events. You may like to include texts about service integration and how it may be beneficial for welfare recipients etc.
o end with a concluding paragraph by synthesising all these information along with their implication perhaps?
