Write an essay responding in some way to the essay you worked with in the previous exercise. You’ll want to summarize and/or quote some of the author’s ideas and make clear whether you’re agreeing, disagreeing, or both agreeing and disagreeing with what the author says.
Grading Rubric:
The thesis will be straightforward for this response paper–you will be expressing disagreement/agreement with all or some of the points the author makes, with certain reasons.
Be careful with your structure–balance the author’s ideas with your own, but realize that you don’t have to duplicate the order of ideas. Make sure you have a good introduction which introduces your entry into the discussion. Use transition words to show how you are moving from one idea to the next, and what you are doing with the ideas. You don’t necessarily have to address all of the original ideas, but if you skip some, you should acknowledge that you are, and explain why you can do so.
Your paragraphs should show your understanding of the author’s ideas, but mostly show your response to them. Explain how/why you agree/disagree with the ideas.
Your sentences need to be clear, not confusing.
Make sure that you take time to proofread–use your word processor AND your brain to check spelling and grammar. Review MLA paper format (for academic papers and citing sources) and make sure your paper follows those guidelines.
