Prepare a chapter summary of no fewer than 900 and no more than 1,000 words in which you summarize Chapter 4 of Richard Immerman’s Empire for Liberty (the chapter entitled “Henry Cabot Lodge and the New American Empire,” pp. 129-62).
Writing advice: Your first paragraph should formally introduce the chapter and its main objective before you proceed to your summary of the content (i.e. “In Chapter Four of Empire for Liberty Richard Immerman discusses / examines / focuses on”). Providing a clear sense throughout the summary that you are describing someone else’s work–i.e. “Immerman argues …” or “The author’s evidence includes …” or “The chapter concludes with …”–is also encouraged.
Formatting and citation issues: The summary should be double-spaced and use Times New Roman 12-point font. Include a title page (for an example see Rampolla, 7th edition, p. 146). Your name should appear only on the title page. Insert page numbers beginning with the first page of the summary, not the title page. If quoting directly from the chapter (this should be done sparingly, at most, in a summary), cite the book in a footnote using the Insert Footnote function in MS Word and carefully following Rampolla’s examples for first and, if necessary, subsequent citations of a book (7th edition, p. 115). If you use no direct quotations you need no footnotes at all since the entire paper is a summary (not an analysis) of one source. If you do need footnotes make sure when using the Word Count function in MS Word to uncheck the box that includes footnote text in the word count.
