SCHOLARLY JOURNAL SUMMARY INSTRUCTIONS
B. F. SKINNER’S & BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS

The Journal Summaries are designed to assist you with your Research Paper, teach you how to search for scholarly journal articles, as well as to practice using APA format. In theory, you should be able to take a well-written journal article and incorporate some portions into your research paper.
Set the font to the standard Times New Roman and the size 12 point, Set the margins to 1 inch and line spacing to double space.

For each Journal Summary, you will select 3 full-text, scholarly journal articles that directly relate to the topic selected: B. F. SKINNER’S & BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS
Read and review each article. Save each article as a PDF file. Your summary should be your own personal review of the three articles that you selected.
Your summary should be a review of the three articles that you selected. The Journal Summary should include a title page, abstract page, the summary of your three selected articles (typically 1 page per article) and the reference page in one Microsoft Word document.

Four documents in total should be included in your submission. You will submit the three PDF documents that you saved (one for each article summarized) and your Journal Summary.

Selecting Articles

When you are searching the Online Library, be sure to select “Full-Text” and “Peer-Reviewed”. If you just enter the theorist’s name or the name of his/her theory, you probably won’t come up with many articles. Instead, select portions of the theory, key words or phrases to use as your search. This will aid you in finding articles.

Very Important
Your articles should be from scholarly journals only. It is preferred that the journals you select should have the word “Journal” in the title example (Journal of Marriage and Family, etc.). Ideally, your Journal Article should have a Methods section, Data, Results and Conclusion sections, but these sections are not required. You must not use book reviews or magazine articles.

REMEMBER, The goal of summary is not to offer an evaluation or opinion of the original article, but, rather, to report the writer’s main ideas and findings. This means that you will need to indicate to your reader the writer’s main point or points or purpose for writing.

though you may need to include one or two brief examples that illustrate the writer’s main point or points.

Write a citation for the journal article at the top of the review. The citation should follow the American Psychological Association’s style–consult the APA-style manual or the link under Resources for citation information. You will need the title of the article, the journal where the article is published, the volume and issue number, publication date, author’s name and page numbers for the article.

APA BASICS
American Psychological Association’s style–consult the APA-style manual

Title Page
Your title page should include a Running head in the header, flush left. It should be an abbreviated title and should not exceed 50 characters. The abbreviated title should be in all caps.
Each page, including your Title Page, should include the page number (top right, right-aligned) within the header. In Microsoft Word, click Insert and then Header.

Abstract
Your abstract should be on page 2 and say Abstract (plain text) at the top, center of the page. Your abstract should be left aligned, but not indented, should between 150–250 words and should be a general summary of the contents of your paper.

In-text citations
In-text citations are vital for a successful paper. You must cite any and all information or ideas that are not your own whether directly quoted or paraphrased.
“If you directly quote, you will need quotation marks along with the page number at the end of the citation” (Gibson, 2010, p. 123). If you summarize a reference, then you do not need to include the page number at the end of the citation (Gibson & Stevenson, 2010). Both of the previous sentences are examples for you to help you correctly cite information.
Be on the lookout for block quotes (a direct quote of 40 words or more) and make sure that you use those sparingly. Strive to have a balance between direct quotes and paraphrasing leaning more heavily on the side of paraphrasing.

Headings
You are encouraged to use headings in your paper. You will begin with Level 1 headings and continue from there as appropriate. Headings will help you organize your paper.

Reference Page
Make sure that your reference page says References (plain text, centered) at the top of your Reference page.
Be sure that the references are in alphabetical order with hanging indentions. In Microsoft Word, you can highlight your reference, right click, click Paragraph, then in the Indention section of the box that opens, click Special and then select Hanging.
Be sure that your references are APA stylized and include where you obtained your reference from if it was obtained online (DOI).

Example of an APA stylized reference
