As we discussed previously, one of the best ways to improve your writing is to read, read, and read. We’ll read from the textbook, Seeing & Writing 4, for each module and discuss a selected reading from those assigned pages. Be sure to check the Discussion to see if the instructor chooses a different reading than the one listed in the modules.
There is one final reading in this course: Chapter 6 of Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, beginning on page 711 of Seeing & Writing 4. Although we haven’t studied comics or graphic novels, students are encouraged to add images or even video to augment the narrative of their feature stories. And McCloud’s passion for defending and explaining this underappreciated and often misunderstood art form is a testament to the power of thorough research and careful argumentation
After you read Chapter 6 of Understanding Comics and consider Scott McCloud’s background from the link above, please join the discussion and consider the following question:
Do you believe that comics are misunderstood and should be given more serious thought? Why or why not?
Be sure to use the strategies found on pages 6-8 in your textbook (“Making Observations” and “Drawing Inferences”) to clarify and support your points on the reading. Your textbook also has an excellent website:
Seeing & Writing 4 website: http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/seeingandwriting4e
Note: The final three readings of this class (Long’s “Ethics,” Berger’s “Seeing,” and McCloud’s “Comics”) are dense and should be revisited to gain even more understanding. And information in all three selections could be compared/contrasted in this DR if you’re uncertain where to start. ??This is our last Discussion Room on the “Seeing” reading – I look forward to your thoughts! 🙂
