Police hold a pivotal role as ‘gatekeepers’ to the criminal justice system. Identify the crime control strategies that police and/or private security use to govern public spaces, and discuss the effects of these strategies on the nature of the relationship between police/private security and one marginal youth group. 2. Juvenile detention and desistance from offending.
Using Mark Halsey’s research into the experiences of young offenders’ in detention and on early-release supervision, identify the major issues raised in terms of desistance from further offending. How could experiences/processes of detention and early release be changed in order to facilitate improvements in levels of desistance from crime?
3. Respect and young people’s subjectivities.
Young people are often placed into ‘moral spaces’ where they are told or required to ‘show respect’ towards others, while their own claims for respect are negated. Using a case study, show how at least one background factor may result in a struggle for subjectivity that attempts to gain respect through crime for young people. Given your case study and its identified problems of (dis)respect involving young people and other community members, develop a youth inclusive strategy that seeks to negotiate conflicting regimes of respect that will be mutually empowering and respectful for young people and the wider community in which they live.
Rationale
This task has five inter-related aims:
1. We want you to develop a critical appreciation of crime controls that negatively impact on young people (e.g. gay or lesbian youth, young women, homeless youth, Aboriginal young people etc), placing them at risk of entering the juvenile justice system.
2. We want to develop your capabilities in thinking about, researching, and identifying strategies that work productively with young people and communities to prevent juvenile crime;
3. We would like to see evidence that you can identify and utilise relevant concepts, research findings and values to better understand the particular experiences of young people;
4. We want to see evidence that you can recognise and incorporate the voices of young people in your analysis of the issues affecting those at risk of entering the juvenile justice system/young offenders as well as incorporating this voice into possible interventions with these young people.
5. We would like to see you integrate the above aims as demonstrated using an essay writing format.
This assessment task can be broadly characterised as a ‘discussion essay’ – it discusses a particular issue in the light of some ‘frame’ or position. The analysis and discussion will provide more than one point of view on the issue and it will work towards providing some recommendations for improvement.
• Introduction: Orients the reader to the topic, previewing the stages of the essay, and, clarifying the writer’s position.
• Body paragraphs: The body consists of a logically sequenced series of paragraphs that develops the essay topic. Each paragraph should express one key idea that relates to your analysis. Begin the paragraph by introducing this key idea and then explain and elaborate on the idea using relevant literature and research. Try to use sentences that connect each paragraph to one another by linking ideas and lines of argument.
• Conclusion: Restates the major argument developed in the essay. Briefly summarise major points and implications for future interventions.

You must acknowledge the ideas of others, reference direct quotes properly using the Harvard referencing system, and include a reference list at the end of your report (not included in the word count).
You must submit your written work to Turnitin prior to submission.
The essay report should be no more than 1,800 words in length.
Viewpoints need to be substantiated using relevant literature, empirical evidence, and convincing argumentation.
