Charlton, T., Panting, C., Willis, H. (2004). Targeting exclusion, disaffection and truancy
in secondary school. Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, 9 (4), 261-275.
Introduction provides useful synopsis of the importance of exclusion as a disciplinary strategy as a topic (in UK). Provides references to research showing a range of negative outcomes for those who are excluded from school. Also points out some of the possible consequences for others if those who are excluded were to remain in the school system. Boys (80%) between the ages of 13-15 most likely to be excluded. Different rates depending upon race. No mention of SES. Useful suggestions about possible problems with the data re exclusion rates. The study was an evaluation of an intervention. Focussed on perceptions of those involved- students, teachers etc.; 30 interviews conducted (random + purposive sample). Results were generally banal, may have been positively biased, no evidence of effectiveness but may provide some ideas for improvement before a more rigorous trial is undertaken. No comment on relationship between evaluators of the program and those who delivered/designed the program (possibility of conflict of interest).
