The aim of this written assignment is to review research on a particular issue in social psychology. You need to choose one of the three issues listed below. However, these issues are still fairly broad. It is your task to define a particular question you want to concentrate on, and to select relevant social psychological theory and research for your review. Thus, your task is to
– define your question and social psychological focus more narrowly,
– search for and select research that makes for a coherent discussion,
– review, discuss and evaluate the research with respect to your question.
Basically, you will address the question of what social psychology has to offer to the understanding of the given issue. However, because there is normally a large body of research on any single topic you will need to be selective, given the limited scope of this assignment. You should aim at a coherent presentation in that you clearly define your question and focus on certain social psychological perspectives (theories, models or concepts). For example, you could contrast two different research perspectives and the insights they offer, or you could discuss how these interrelate. Importantly, based on your review, you should include an evaluation of the contributions and limitations of the research (and the specific theories and concepts you focus on).
The resulting paper should be 1200 words long (+/- 10%), excluding in-text references (or, to make the count easier, a maximum of 1400 words including in-text references). It should conform to APA style, and cite a minimum of six references, including at least three journal articles describing empirical studies. The assignment is due on Friday 12 October, to Room 254 Social Sciences South. Late papers, without an approved extension, will be penalised by a reduction of 2% for each day that the work is late.
Two tutorials have been set aside to provide support for this assignment (in Weeks 6 and 7). In the Week 6 tutorial, we will discuss in more detail the aims and marking criteria of the assignment, processes of how to approach the task, as well as the kind of questions social psychologists might ask in relation to each of the three issues. In the Week 7 tutorial, we will look more closely at an example Research Assignment to identify good and bad qualities, and we will discuss some formal requirements and standards.
