This assignment is a movie review for Sociology 358 Film and Society in which a film will be used to give examples of sociological terms. The text for the class is Belton, John: American Cinema/American Culture, McGraw Hill, 2nd Edition, 2005. Please list the text in the Bibliography even if you do not use it or do not have access to it. Do not use the bibliography tool under the references tab in MS Word. Feel free to contact me with any questions or for an extension. The instructions and assignment as I received it is below:
Besides viewing the films for sociological content, the student is to view the movie and look for the specific conditions that the text describes. For example if I were viewing a movie discussed in the chapter talking about melodramas, I would look for the conditions that make the film a melodrama and discuss these conditions.
After completion of the film the student is to type, double space with one to one and one half inch margins a discussion of the areas that were identified by the student and the text as being important to the film. EXAMPLE: What role does stratification play in the film script? Are sex roles being defined by the actors? Is there deviance being shown, and if so, what is the response from the characters and society in the film?

The following are examples of terms that can be used. You are not limited to these terms.

A.) STRATIFICATION: Members of a society are sorted into different status’s and classes based on differences in wealth, power, and prestige.
Does the student see any issues in the film dealing with upper, middle or lower class? How are people portrayed in relationship to economics, education, employment etc.?

B.) RACE AND ETHNIC RELATIONS: Does the student see any issues in the film surrounding race or ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination or stereotyping?

C.) GENDER ROLES: The roles that men and women assume in society based on their sex.
How are men and women portrayed in the film? Does the student see conflict between males and females in the film? If so, describe this conflict. (I.E.., Dirty Harry, women are seen as being less competent than their male counterparts on the police force. This is shown through how male officers communicated with female officers, and what jobs the female officers were assigned to.)

D.) PROPAGANDA: Does the film attempt to change people’s beliefs about social issues, or world issues? Is there a one sided argument being presented toward an issue?
EXAMPLE: Back to Bataan. This movie was made during W.W.II. How the Japanese are portrayed, clothing, attitude toward the USA, attitude toward human life etc., has propaganda value. The fact that many of the Japanese are actually portrayed by Hispanic people is an indication that in reality the Japanese were in internment camps and not allowed to take part in any money making venture, even movies.

E.) URBAN VS. RURAL: Does the student see any differences between the way urban or city life is portrayed and the way rural life is portrayed?

F.) DEVIANT VS. NON-DEVIANT: Deviance is defined as: “behavior that violates the norms of a particular society”.
Does the student see comparisons or contrasts between situations or people who are deviant and non-deviant? If so, what? Does the student see the film portraying deviance or non-deviance in any particular way? What roles do the actors play and how does this affect the viewing audience and what is their effect on the movie?
G.) AGE: Does the student see any comparisons or conflicts between people of different ages? If so, what? How are people of different ages treated?

The movie to use is: Fight Club (1999). This movie according to the text is an example of seeing through fantasy and suggests that fantasy is the necessary product of individual and collective alienation in corporate capitalism. Only through fantasy can we endure the dehumanizing anonymity of consumer culture in modern mass society. Corporate consumer culture has resulted in the emasculation of modern man. The masculinity is recovered through the pain and suffering of the ?Fight Club?. Please include that in the paper but re-worded and citing the text pg406-407.
