What Portfolio?
Here are detailed instructions for your paper
Portfolio
We will work together to help you end this class with an 1800 or greater word paper that analyzes (note: not just summarizes) a reading or set of theoretically related readings (e.g., Marx’s writings on class and the Communist Manifesto), and then applies them to a social problem or issue today. This is to display your ability to not only master the material, but also show that it can still be applicable in modern life.
In previous years, students have written an analysis of the university cafeteria through game theory, or an analysis of their fraternity through Durkheimian notions of sacred objects and social rituals. Your topic is up to you, although I encourage you to approve it with the TA or me before you begin writing.
Your final paper (should be 1800 words)
**Your portfolio is incomplete without all four of these elements. If your writing partner does not send you back notes/edits in a timely manner, see me immediately.**
PAPER MUST HAVE QUOTATIONS FROM BOOKS
FOUR SOCIOLOGICAL TRADITIONS SELECTED READINGS EDITED BY RANDALL COLLINS AND FOUR SOCIOLOGICAL TRADITIONS BY RANDALL COLLINS
Sounds the same but one is pink the other is green
PAPER DONE IN APA FORMAT!!!
1) A strong thesis statement (what will the person argue in this paper?) that references a specific theory. For example, “the manner in which individuals cohere into a group with the accompanying rise in emotional energy is a clear example of Durkheim’s theory of emotional effervescence. This can be seen through three component parts: the shared attention towards the plays on the field, the similar physical gestures that the fans make, and the feelings of unity among the fans that comes with a winning play.”
2) A short explanation of what that theory is. For example, the next paragraph would say something like this: “In Durkheim’s theory of emotional effervescence, he states that ‘QUOTATION FROM BOOK HERE’ (p. 853). Simply put, this means that…EXPLANATION HERE THAT ALLOWS ME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE THEORY IS.”
3) A rationale for why they choose this real-life situation to apply it to (in the case of our example, the football game).
4) A clear plan or structure for the rest of the paper.
5) No grammar or spelling mistakes.

ONLY REFERENCING IDEA
• History agrees that class conflict has always been a relevant issue (Marx &Engels [1848]1994 : p. PAGE NUMBER/s).
Or
• The writings of Karl Marx and Fredrick Engels ([1848] 1994, p. PAGE NUMBER) suggests that class conflict exists
In the Bibliography:
Marx, K., & Engels, F. (1848). “History as a Class Struggle” in R. Collins, ed. Four
Sociological Traditions: Selected Readings (pp. 254-290). New York: Oxford University Press.
What if the article/book/website is?
• There are different ways you have to cite for articles or books with multiple authors, or for electronic references (3 to 5-name all, then et al.).
• Ignorance is not an excuse. Use the resources on the Purdue website on the next slide (they really cover everything) or ask a librarian.
• Remember, plagiarism can cost you financial aid, recommendations, your grade on an assignment or a course, or even your college career.
