The State of Iowa and Iowa cities use taxes on alcohol, tobacco, gambling, gasoline, pickup truck license plates, and speed camera fines for this end. Pick one of these taxes to write about.
Here are a few questions that should be answered:
1. Will the taxes have the desired effect (usually to reduce consumption)?
2. Will there be unexpected economic side-effects?
3. Are the taxes progressive or regressive?
4. Are the taxes primarily to influence behavior or to raise money?
Basic Requirement for paper
1. Minimum 6 pages . Microsoft Word Document. Charts, graphs and images can be included but do not count toward the 6 pages.
2. Do not use first person "I", "me" and so on.
3. Should use newspaper sources extensively as well as economic concepts from textbook.
Paper Format
A. One inch margins on top, bottom and both sides.
B. Use either 10 or 12 characters per inch, double spaced.
C. No title page, just title at the top, your name (Melissa Lindle), my name (Instructor Mel Prewitt), date, and name of class (Introduction to Economics). Skip three spaces and begin paper. Do not need a bibliography at end.
D. Don’t justify the right margin.
E. Must cite all paraphrases and quotations. Use MLA style. All short quotations must be placed within quotation marks. Avoid using the authors’ words as much as possible. It is sometimes important to quote a senator but its almost never important to quote a newspaper reporter.
F. Long quotations (longer than 3 or 4 lines) should be indented 1/2 inch on both sides, single-spaced, skip 3 spaces above and below the quotation, don’t use quotation marks, and place citation in brackets. Should not use more than 1 or 2 long quotations.
G. Number the pages.
H. Do not skip a space between paragraphs.
I. Correctly use as many terms as possible from the included list. Use a bold font for these terms when they are used.
You should explain why you believe as you do and why you came to that opinion based upon these readings and materials. Your explanation of you view should contain specific evidence to support or illustrate what you believe.
